Let's say a guy lives not in your immediate neighborhood, but pretty close. Like, 10 miles away. And due to a legal loophole, he's allowed to murder children under the age of 10, as long as he does so from his own home. I know, I know, but play along. Like, in the 1700s, there was a state law that was around for a day that said you could kill anyone under the age of 10. The next day, it was repealed everywhere but in this particular city, nobody noticed until 1960, then they repealed it in this city, too, but he's the only resident who lived there in 1960, so somehow he's grandfathered in. Like, he killed a few kids (nobody you know), they called the cops, he called his lawyer, and the cops concluded there's nothing they could do about it. As long as does it from his own property, he's above the law. So every couple of weeks, he goes out on his balcony with a high-powered rifle and picks off the occasional random kid at a distance. He's going to continue to do so, and the cops legally can't, and won't, do anything about it.
He's never killed anyone you know, or anyone related to anyone you know, or any friend of anyone you know. What, if anything, would you do?

Your post kinda got to me. The person who lives next door to me is a registered sex offender. I don't know the details, but he was convicted of raping a girl under the age of 8. That's just scary.

How about if you tell us what you are really talking about?

An extremely difficult question. Very interesting and I had actually typed out an answer. But I can't answer it right now. Gotta think on this one.

I don't know what I would do, but I know what I think would happen. Pragmatically speaking- the good of the many and all that jazz. If he's picking multiple kids off then to protect future kids the guy would have to be Dexter'd. I think the parents would probably band together to do it though. And, personally speaking, I doubt any jury would convict them.

The jury is just my personal opinion. I can't support it (or any of my other thoughts here) with any metrics.

Sounds like a bar exam question. Federal law trumps state law here. He's guilty of federal civil rights violations and can easily be put away for life.
If the feds didn't act, then the vigilante solution would be the way to go. |

But then again we have laws right now that allow, as I see it, for the killing of babies. And while I find it extremely distasteful in almost every case, I haven't gone to any extremes to stop it as some people have. And I don't condone it when people do go to those extremes. I guess that since we are a Nation of laws, and I believe in the law, I would do whatever I could to change that law. But honestly, it nearly impossible to really answer that question. I truly don't know. |

I've often thought about kicking my neighbors behind (and more) when I saw him playing outside with the daughter of the woman he's dating (the same age of the girl he was convicted of raping). I just have to remind myself that he's not worth going to jail over. I have to pick my battles. If nothing else, I helped the police catch him by calling them when he was around because he failed to register as a sex offender. It's not much, but it's better than nothing. |

A lot more can be done by people being aware of the people around them and letting other's know so they can protect their kids. Almost none of my neighbors even knew about the sex offender registry until I went door to door and put up flyers. Don't get me wrong. I didn't single that guy out. That would be wrong. I just made people aware that there is such a registry. |

I don't know how old she was. The police records only said it was a girl "8 or under". Who knows? They seal those records to protect the victim. I think he should be in jail, but I'm not the judge or jury.

You have to respect the legal system, even if you disagree with it sometimes.

The situation is not hypothetical. Read about drone warfare. Now what will you do?
I'm near despair and feel helpless about it. A couple of protests and leafleting here and there where we hope to reach some of the kids who think it's a video game.
