No, I'm not wrong at all. Geese cross roads all the time, even in heavy traffic.

If they weren't under the care of one of the adult pairs or another, they probably wouldn't be alive right now. There is one easy way to tell, pick one of them up and see what happens.

I said they haven't been kidnapped or adopted, not that the adults aren't the current caretakers while they are separated from original immediate family members. That little stray was coming toward me the other day, considering the option, I think, after one of the adults "goosed" him/her and wouldn't allow passage to shore.

And while the others were attempting to scale the weir last night, one of the strays swam all the way back to the park alone, sat on the water looking at the shoreline from about 15-20 feet back for a minute, then decided, alas, s/he'd better go back to the others. Returned again 10 or 15 minutes later with the bunch. That's the first I've seen of such independent gosling behaviour from this group.

Here's the video I mentioned yesterday. Though they're all on the water, you can see how, within the main group, they keep largely to their family groups and are careful not to cross lines. Accidents happen sometimes, though, watch out, swim fast Smile

One little one got "goosed" this afternoon and protested loudly at the time, as you can imagine. Look at the chunk of brand new white feathers hanging from this adult's beak!:

In such circumstances, going to magicalaurie for sanctuary's a very reasonable thing to do, I say. Smile

I've had many people tossing bread at me in discussion of Canada Geese, particularly on the "Empathy" thread. I don't feed them, though I've been accused of both feeding them and not feeding them, weather dependent- which way is the wind blowing, you know?

These geese have had bread thrown at them by others and they're not keen on it, imagine. "We like grass, thanks. Please don't throw things at our children." Smile

Something they have access to in the park -and I've seen one family in particular taking very keen interest, the "Pieces of Eight" again Smile - is crab apples. They're dropping off the tree these days and a little bit ago the family decided to demonstrate their delight at the new food on the menu. Ranking only slightly behind seaweed, I'd say.

They had me concerned a while there- choking hazard, perhaps, but they manage them. And I decided to watch the demonstration- if they're going to learn to eat apples, they may as well learn from their parents and why not under the watchful eye of magicalaurie at the same time? For the record, I've yet to find any choking victims under the apple tree and it's been there a few years now, at least. That bolstered my confidence, as well, but of course I know these birds don't need my confidence. I think they appreciate it, though, FWIW. Smile Got some video I might bring here as a special sneak peek highlight at their DVD, which will accompany their book, of course. Smile

I'll be back with a pic.

Some manage them more quickly than others- there's a certain boldness in the knack and I'm not sure how the digestion goes, but the silver-browed seems to be managing alright. Some work at them patiently... then toss 'em aside and hit the grass. Smile
