The Edmonton bedroom community Fort Saskatchewan brings in sheep every summer. They even hire a shepherd (wouldn't that be awesome on your resume, kids?)
Best of all, they end the season with a sheep parade!

Sheep and goats are great as pets! Really loveable! Besides being delicious, they are extremely useful.
Living in the city, I miss seeing them. Laurie, I might take my bicycle out on the Rail Trail today, and bring my camera. We'll see. When I lived in Florida, goats were mainly used for food. The Caribbeans make Curry Goat and it is so good...I don't understand why they don't do that up here in Maine. Heck, we eat LAMB, right? Goat is so much milder, and NO gamey taste. But, given a choice for a pet, I'd take a goat hands down. They play with ya. It's difficult to get a sheep to play. A goat will wear you out! Boy did I love that little white female I had for more than a year! It really affected me! Goats are unique. And really a "happy" animal! They have a sense of humor! Mine "laughed" at me after knocking me down! My Dad got such a kick out of that! Doug |

You all like spiders, eh? Here is one like I used to have:
http://spotonlists.com/wp-content/upload......tula.jpg Her name was Harriet ("Hairy It", get it?), and she was beautiful! I had to give her away when I went to Florida in 1990. Author Stephen King gave her to me. He was my boss for 6 years. They were going to throw her out! I took the aquarium and spider home and she grew as big as the one in the pic. One of the coolest pets I have ever had... Doug |

I've revised my theory in that I think they may actually be a mated pair. I'm going out on a bit of a limb here, though obviously not a farfetched one , since the males and females are so difficult apparently to distinguish from each other. I think the female may have been one of this year's goslings and maybe the gander got bullied by the others cause he chose her. Or maybe she looked so scruffy in the above pics because she was in a yearly molt rather than changing from gosling to adult feathers. Not sure. They did seem to stay on the outskirts of the flock often, but sometimes they seemed to lead, as well. Contenders, I say. Got a shot of them together today that helped sway me further in the gander & goose direction- based on their tail feathers, which I've made mention of somewhere here in the NVMS, perhaps on this very thread, though maybe on the Birders thread. The one with the healed face wound has a broader, flatter tailfeather section, as you can see in the pic below. Based on my readings, that may distinguish the gander from the goose. You can see a distinction between these two in the photo. Speculation, but somewhat informed speculation, regardless. I haven't yet found a lot of info on Canada Geese, but I've been studying some in the field, as you know. For what it's worth: goose.......................................................... & gander ? :) These two are absolutely fantastic company. I've certainly enjoyed spending time with them. They're sticking around and remind me of the pair I was studying a bit earlier this year. Based on brief comparisons of their facial markings, though, I think they are a different pair. I'd like to take a closer look through my photos soon, and see if I can "confirm" that. Goodnight. |

Yay! Look who I found in the woods today! Third day in a row I've been on the trail- yesterday and the day before, a deer ran from me earlier on the way. Later in the day today I went out with my sister and we stumbled on this young buck. Very quiet. My battery warning came on, naturally, as soon as I began snapping photos. I remained calm and took my time changing them and he graciously allowed a bunch of pics and video, too. His antlers are distinctive and I expect to be seeing him again- so I'll know him when I do! Lovely, indeed! :
more pics to follow, maybe. |

Very cool, Laurie! I had no idea porcupines were so slow moving and meticulous backing down a tree.

I didn't know porcupines climbed trees.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
