I use a live rabbit in all of my shows. Now with the hot summer we are having, I wonder if anyone has a solution for my dilema. Sometimes between shows I will have several hours to kill. While I would like to spend it inside a shop or library, I am concerned about the welfare of my rabbit. I use a large cage for her travel as well as a fan attached to her cage for comfort, but still would not leave her in my minivan without some additional way to keep her cool during these hot days. Suggestions would be most welcome.

I take my rabbit with me into wherever I kill time. He's inside his travel cage and the cage is covered so most people don't know he's there.

I'm with Jim. Never leave your rabbit an the vehicle! I have a modified pet carrier(s) that my bunny(ies) travel in. I use a similar type and size carrier to transport my doves too, albeit it is modified differently. I also found some pet mat thingys that work perfectly for covers. I just cut out and hemmed a place for the handle on the carriers to go through and they are a perfect fit. They work like a charm and allow me to hide the animals when I don't want them to be seen.

Yup. Gotta agree with Regan and James. Never leave your animals in a parked car on very warm or hot days. It would be considered cruel by many and illegal in some states. (Only 14 states have laws to protect animals in parked cars?!?! http://www.animallaw.info/articles/qvuspetsincars.htm )

We also use modified pet carriers for our doves and rabbits. Like Regan, we cover ours with a cloth that has a hemmed opening for the handle.

Another thing to consider is the extremely bad publicity you could get if it were discovered by someone that you had left an animal in a parked car when it is hot outside. Here's some national press from the past few weeks from the Toronto area:

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/06/21/......418.html

An article like one of these saying "Magician leaves rabbit in hot parked car," could pretty much ruin a performer's career in the area.

Thanks for the idea of a carrier that blends in fairly well. I will look into getting one.

You guys are correct. Any kind of animal will not survive the kind of heat we're getting.
I carry my bunny in a wicker basket at all times. I bought quite a few to have spares.
Some years back IKEA imported them from Sweden. The weaved wicker have enough space between them provide enough air space.
I find the plastic and metal pet carriers sold by the pet shops gets a bit hot for my bunny.

I have a remote start for my car. The doors remain locked while car is running. The AC is running too. When I first go in to check with my client at the gig my car is running with the AC on while the doors are locked.

Here in Montreal, there are areas in the city where it is illegal to leave your car running more than five minutes when parked... And if you are not in the car, it is an automatic ticket... And yes, they are quite expensive. So leaving the car running with the A/C on here is not really good, even with a remote starter for short period of time.

I use a custom made acrylic cage with a 12 volt computer fan attached to the back that is incased in a box that I can place ice wrapped in a zip lock bag; I move the cage away from any windows and this is sufficient to keep my bunny cool. The cool air stays on the bottom of the cage cooling the rabbit as the warm air escapes from holes drilled in the top.

Here is a photo of the cage in one of the windows for display durring an expo

If you look close you can see the water bottle and food dish
