My grandmother died yesterday. She was 100 years old. For her I feel nothing.
She and I were never close. Fond of each other sure, and as a kid I could always count on a home baked birthday cake. Still, I really don't feel the loss. For her I feel relief. You could not call the last 20 years of her life really living. She could barely hear, only walk a few steps, in pain constantly from arthritis. It was not really living. But she held on. and here is where my pain is. She held on to 100 for my aunt. My aunt is 71. When my Grandfather passed in 1979, the two of them began a probably very unhealthy symbiotic relations ship. My aunt is very high functioning, but something is wrong with her upstairs wiring. She has always been that way. She was never diagnosed, but I have no clue how she will handle life without her companion. She lives in New York and I in California. I offered for her to move out here. She would need assisted living for health reasons of her own. She very likely will not be able to afford it. I feel for my Aunt. All alone in her own little world with no one to ground her. All prayers are welcome.

It doesn't seem to me that your grandmother's and aunt's relationship was necessarily unhealthy. But now it will indeed lead to great difficulty, and I'm sorry about that.
Can you afford to visit her often? |

Very sorry to hear about your loss. My grandmother passed in '92 and not a day goes by I don't miss her fierce.
