I got lucky and was able to replace my copy of the Amateur Magician's Handbook that I lost in a flood. I found it in a Goodwill shop outside of Dallas Texas. It was one of the later hard back version with the video tape section in it. It was darn near mint with a clean dust jacket on it marked for $1. couldn't get to the check out quickly enough.

I haven't had a good used bookstore find in a long time.

Used book stores, thrift stores, flea markets. Most of the ones I found were in used book stores, but you have to search regularly.

One has to be careful with Amazon or Abe's for used magic books. Some of the asking prices I've seen are crazy and completely unrealistic.

I wandered into a bookshop in a small town (Port Townsend, WA to be exact) some years back and picked up Greater Magic for $15. 3rd or 4th printing, I don't remember, but it had the orange buckram cover and no dust jacket. Best deal I'd made in awhile!

Just because it's out of print doesn't mean 1) it is worth ten times what you paid for it and 2) that the book is any good. That said, I have noticed most older classic books go for very little in used bookshops and these are the ones from my collection I tend to hang on to, while other more expensive books go up for sale. |

I've also found some good deals on Amazon so you can't completely dismiss it. What I think is a bit funny is when the prices for a book on Amazon will range all over the place. For example there may be several copies of a book selling for around $50 and then a couple for several hundred. What are those sellers thinking?

I found one of Stuart Cramer's Germain books for 25 cents at a swap meet in socal. Also at the same swap, I found a beat up copy of Ortiz's Annotated Erdnase for a dollar.

At a bookstore in Maryland I found _Inside Magic_ by George Boston, with dust jacket.
In a different Maryland bookstore I found _Fun with Magic_ and _More Fun with Magic_ by Joseph Leeming, both with dust jackets. ----- Sonny

Those two Leeming books were great library favorites when I was growing up. I would check them out again and again. I'd love to see those again some time.

A good bargain place nowadays is when there are leaflets in a lot at an auction sale. Most of the time people shun such lots and miss out on some extremely valuable magic in lecture notes and/or leaflets that go for a very low price when the content and the rarity is very high. I've bought many of these at Potter and Potter and before this at Swann Galleries.
The market has changed indeed and the ration time spent vs price is no longer with the book shops

I just found a Coles edition of Hugard's More Card Tricks Made Easy at the used book shop.
I got it for 99 cents. It's in great shape. |

I have had some good luck with ABE, it requires some patience.

If you live in the Detroit area the big John King Used book store had quite a few used magic books and magazines, Genii, Magic, Tops and many others.

There are some magic books on sale at Mercer Street books in Manhattan-or at least there were as of about a week ago.

Powell's Books in Portland always has some magic books and you can view their entire inventory online (www.powells.com). Unfortunately, I've never found a bargain there but they must show up sometimes.

There aren't as many bargains at used book stores like there use to be, but you can occasionally find a great OOP book.
