As a puppet seller, our policy as well as others I have dealt with is to ask for a deposit and once we have the deposit, we start making the puppet. When the puppet is ready to be shipped out, we ask for the balance and after getting the balance, the puppet ships out the following business day.

I'm afraid Tim's new policy is not the same...

In any case, Ausie should have not cancelled his order just because of stories. If Tim gave you a timeline then you should clear it up with him first.  He can make it in 12 weeks so if that is your agreement with him, then you should just clear it up with him. As I have said my Tater was shipped promptly. Its the new order (Rupert) I am having problems with and yes the new policy is kinda peculiar but if you want a Selberg then you must be willing to wait for it...

Wanlu,
how is Aussie to clear it up with Tim, if he DOESN'T respond to emails or phone call?

Tim replies to emails, not instantly but he sooner or later will.

I think Aussie just needs to wait for a reply instead of cancelling the order. Of course it's his money so I really can't tell him how to handle the situation but if he really wants a Selberg, I am saying he really needs to wait.

I am not tolerating Tim's new policy... in fact I think its crazy specially in my case because I was not aware of such new policy before I made my deposit. But for vents who don't mind waiting, all I can say is a Selberg could very well be worth the wait.

Tim must be clear with his new policy before he accepts a deposit.

My two cents worth.

To be frank with all of you, I am not a perfect buyer so I am not in a position to ask Tim to be a perfect seller.

My Rupert went under several delays and miscommunications until I finally made a deposit... so I was not really in a position to act like Tim is being unfair.

My only point is that a seller should always be clear with his buyers as far as terms and conditions are concerned..

I appreciate all of you being so open and honest in this discussion. My plan for this figure was to be included this Summer and I was always clear about that from the outset.

During my initial enquiries with Selberg he responded almost immediately every time, and believe me I asked many questions over a course of several emails. Then I posted here and on Facebook about my order as I was genuinely excited about it. But the overwhelming response of similar dissatisfied customers raised concern. So I emailed Tim pointing him out to this thread with a link to it. I received no response which seemed suddenly in keeping with all of your stories. So I emailed him that I would cancel my order unless he had a figure in stock, not receiving a response convinced me to cancel my order.

I'm disappointed of course but from what I've read from many other vents and what some have since told me I believe I made the right decision. Since cancelling my order I have not heard from Selberg.

That is sad news Aussie... but my strong suggestion is if you really want a Selberg, you will just have to be patient. So far I have sent Tim three unanswered emails... but I'm still waiting, I know he will reply before Armagedon.

OR... you can watch out for figures for sale on Ebay and at VentCentral, in fact there is one right now at the Marketplace.

While its true that a lot of us are not happy with the waiting part, it is also true that a lot of vents say that a Selberg is worth the wait.

Maybe so Wanlu, but as I said I really wanted the figure by this Summer as pert of a planned new act. I believed I would get that up until now. This is reaffirmed by Selberg's sudden email non-responsiveness since placing and consequently cancelling my order despite me suggesting I was prepared to take a stock figure if he had one.

Like so many of us we rely on our figures as part of our business success and an unreliable supplier can not contribute to that.

I definitely think Aussie did the right thing. Firstly, these are not inexpensive items and sending money to someone half way around the world who isn't answering emails makes one kinda nervous. Secondly, this is just not the way to do business...Aussie advised when the puppet was needed and this obviously was never going to happen. I think it's time people stopped sticking up for shoddy business people just because 'they're a good artist' etc. It's a business and they should conduct it as such.

Here endeth the rant.

I think that if a seller is just straight forward in telling the client about his delivery schedule, I think there is no problem. I am not saying I am happy with Tim Selberg's policy because I am NOT! I think his policy stinks! But if only he can be straightforward and tell his clients his delivery schedule before asking for a deposit and actually get the figure ready as scheduled, then it's still good business.

Take Brant Gilmer for example... when I emailed him last June of 2007, he said if my order is placed by that time, the figure will be ready by Spring of 2009. That's about two years... and if only I was not too impatient, I should have received a Gilmer figure three years ago.

Can anyone guess how long it will take to have a custom made Hartz figure? One will be so lucky if Mr Hartz will actually make one for him. I have been waiting for mine for 5 years and still no luck. The only good thing is he does not ask for a deposit so you can't really demand a deadline.

I guess I was very lucky with my custom Cowles wood figure, which was swiftly made and the quality is awesome. So if one does not have the luxury of time to wait for a figure, I suggest you try Tim Cowles who makes fantastic figures as well. But if one can wait... I strongly believe and I'll say it again, a Selberg is worth the wait....just like a Gilmer, a McRay or a Hartz is worth the wait.

I have no doubt Tim Selerg's figures are amazing, but when I placed my order I made it clear I needed him by December. As I said since posting this thread and mentioning it on my Facebook page I have been inundated by disgruntled customers with similar stories as yours. I agree Wanlu that if a figure maker is clear and upfront at the beginning about lead time and actually sticks to it than most people don't have a problem with that. I don't think people are upset because of the length of wait time, but more so because of the lack of communication and inability to remain on a schedule that Tim seems to have.

These days of course there are a growing number of figure makers who are easily comparable such as Albert Alfaro, I have one of his figures, and his reputation for providing high quality figures within the time he commits to is well known. While we vents can appreciate and respect the art and skill of these wonderful people who build our figures for us, at the end of the day for most of us this is our life and our bread and butter as well. Like any business we must have reliable suppliers and luckily we still have choice.

Thank you everybody for your advice Smile

Tim emailed me to express his concerns about this thread and that he hoped we could clear this matter up and continue with my order. I informed him that I was simply reacting to this thread and other information I received from his past and present customers as that is all I have to go on when ordering all the way from Australia.

To be honest I didn't want to cancel my order as I've been wanting a Selberg for years, but when I innocently post that I finally have ordered one and the overwhelming response was so negative it surprised and concerned me.

However, I'm not unreasonable and of course if Tim can deliver on my order within the time I require him (I advised him when placing my order I need the figure by December which would be 16 weeks or 4 months at least) than I'd be ecstatic and happy to continue with the order. If I got him by then I'll be the first to post in this forum and every social network about it, and that was what I replied to Tim's email.

I didn't expect this all to happen I was simply sharing with the vent community that I finally ordered a Selberg.

Tim has emailed me again and has stated he will have the figure I ordered to me by December this year. He expressed his regrets as to the tone of this thread and I believe him. His approach in his emails following this thread has been very kind and although I reacted to advise given to me by so many of you (no doubt with the best intentions) I believe everyone deserves a fair go. So based on the conversations Tim and I have had today I'm going ahead with my order.

Glad to hear everything worked out and your still getting the figure you wanted.
Everyone did have good intentions, based on what so many knew about ordering a figure from him, no one wanted you to be disappointed or have plans for a new show fouled up.
