Say your at a party or at a bar and someone hears you are a magician and asks you to do a trick, you have nothing on you, no pre prepared tricks/gimmicks in your wallet or pockets and no deck of cards available, what would be the most impressive trick you would do?
I personally do the psycokinetic (invisible) touch routine but I'm curious what other people would do in such situation |

Well with a group of people around somebody always has a few coins on them. I've doen the Slydini sequence. If in a bar the torn and restored napkin (the do as I do version) If there is a variety of coins an equivoque works

Magic Square seems to impress people.
Posted: Jul 29, 2012 8:09am I try to borrow a biz card. Then I can do center tears, peeks, etc... Of course I always have in my wallet just in case. Posted: Jul 29, 2012 8:11am If there is a deck of cards around, you are all set. |

A version of the Tenkai Pennies I made. it doesn't kill (Yet!) But it gets some chuckles. Sometimes I use it as a 'The coins are in which hand?" And then they usually say one's in one hand and one in the other.
Again, gets a small laugh.

I agree with Ovation! Probably the first thing I'd do is the Slydini sequence with a borrowed coin. Then I would probably fool around with a couple of other one coin moves (Messiah vanish and some other really simple stuff, of which the names I cannot remember ). Finally I'd borrow a second coin and do Tenkai Pennies 2.0.
This is almost always what I go to in an impromptu situation. It usually goes over pretty well! - Lliam |

Recapped. If you're in a group of people, someone is bound to have a pen on them. If not Recapped, then I usually do a body loading effect with coins. If I feel like doing something different, I'll rip a napkin up into 4 and perform a basic sponge ball routine (works best if they're red). Good old torn & restored paper towel is also always good.

Slydini Toilet Paper Trick (well, it's impressive to the participant at least )
Pen thru dollar bill - uses pen, dollar bill, napkin with 2 sec prep Disappearing salt shaker - uses quarter, napkin and salt shaker Pouring sugar from sugar packet into fist and then vanishing it - uses sugar packet and 3 sec prep. Zombie routine using fork, knife, roll, and napkin - 4 second prep time Of all the above I listed, the disappearing salt shaker still shocks people. |

Either a hand penetration effect with my wedding band or if I can get some paper napkins, a impromptu spongeball routine.

Situation dependent of course but if I can get away with an arm twist that usually packs pretty big without any other props. You can even warm up to that with a little Copperfieldesque downward facing thumbs 'do as I do' action for a starter.

I'm fond of doing the coin penetration thru the handkerchief and ring. If I carry the handkerchief, it's almost a given that I can borrow the rest. Sometimes, I can even borrow the handkerchief (making sure that it's clean, of course!).

Luke Jermay in his book 3510 has an amazing 3 person mind reading effect in the chapter, "Touching on Hoy." No fishing, no writing things down, you simply ask three people to think of something and than you proceed to tell them what it is. It's so simple yet so impactful.

I'm starting to enjoy effects that are prop less, like "PK Touches" from Banachek, "Lift" from Derren Brown, Luke Jermay's effect "Touching on Hoy" and the one were he moves the lines in a spectators hand. No props or anything just body to body stuff. Even the calculator effect Richard Osterlind does in "Live Without A Net" although you write down a prediction the fact you have someone use their own I Phone is fantastic!
