Sally Ride has passed away at age 61 after losing a battle with cancer.
You may or may not agree with me, but in two short space flights, she managed to become an inspiration to young girls in Science all over the country and maybe the world. I am sure the science publishing company that is named for her will continue in her name. Rest In Peace Dr. Ride.

I remember re-working the song "Ride, Captain, Ride" for her for her first space flight. Her work aside from her flights was so impressive, and inspirational. It's a shame that it wasn't in public forefront in a larger scale. She was a great influence to a lot of people and I'm sure will continue to be so.

George Takei, a staunch advocate for gay rights (and kind of a space guy himself), posted today:
"Sally Ride was a true pioneer. Not many knew she happened also to be a lesbian, in a commited partnership for nearly 30 years. The heavens welcomed her home today." He also linked to this very nice piece about her: http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/fir......omes-out |

Does her choice of partners make any difference at all. I have set this woman up as a hero in my science classroom for 20 years. I have held her out as a role model for my female students. I intend to continue to do so. I never knew she was gay, and I think that is a tribute to the lack of relevance to such a fact. Who cares! Did it effect her job performance? No. We will all miss you Sally.

Why wouldn't you want to know that? It is a great story. |

I don't think Magus saying "Like I really needed to know that" was meant to be an insult or a put down of her or that he thinks less of her now. The problem with the liberal media is they want everyone to believe that anyone's personal business is EVERYONE'S business. It isn't never has been and never will be. It's just like a certain editor of a magician's magazine. He can't leave well enough alone when a well known name in magic dies He will make comments such as "He was a very good magician, But couldn't stop drinking or kicking lamp posts" We didn't need to know that.

We didn't know Sally Ride's orientation because she knew that would be the surest way to kill her career.
No other astronaut would have to hide something like that.

And yet if Takei had mentioned her unsung husband nobody would have said "we don't need to know."
I'm going to disagree with Bob Marley (in this context). The color of someone's skin (and all that other stuff) is important. Cultural diversity is super-cool, IMO. What I think it really comes down to is recognizing and respecting other peoples' cultures and lifestyles, while also recognizing how much you have in common. I think the whole "color-blind" line is bull.
