I like the shirt application, and screwing the lid down into the neck. The rest aren't really appealing to me. Not a real critique of the effect, just the card and bill seem too incongruous. Now I love the random and absurd, but those two just leave me ''meh.'

I didn’t see anything wrong whatsoever that could be considered as despicable, and or as smut in the demo as presented by Dan in the link you provided to the Penguin site? Also, what does the link you gave have anything to do with You Tube and “still frame”? God, I’m only 65, but has senility already caught up with me as I have no idea what you are referring to! LOL

Gaffed, I think Magicsquared was being playful about the still shot.
Phil, you don't look or post like someone 65. More like 38. PLEASE tell me the secret is a glass of wine at night. |

I think what threw me off was the reference to You Tube and my not paying attention to the still frame before I hit play. So with that, I had no idea what Magicsquared was referring to. Gotta admit, that does indeed look awkward! Anyway, my mistake. I never realized that I post like someone who is around 38!(?) I do however have a daughter who is 39 so does that count for anything? My avatar picture is about 4 years old and I guess I’m just one of those lucky guys who doesn’t have any grey hair (yet) although it’s getting a tad thinner. Anyway, thanks for compliment and you most definitely made my day! As a matter of fact I’m feeling rather feisty now and I think I’ll go and beat up my parrot. P.S. The secret isn’t wine as I don’t drink wine so it must be the V.O. on the rocks.

I watched the trailer again ( very cool trailer ) and no one in these settings will think trick bottle, etc. It's not because they are drinking. People go out to be entertained, socialize and it put them in a receptive mood even if they drink apple juice. I've done pen through bill in these settings and no one ever thinks it's a trick pen. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S14733 The bottle through shirt looked great. Also the bill through the top. |

I think the problem with this type of trick is that everyone does not trust you or the bottle I think just about everyone in the demo did not want to see the card or bill or shirt but DID want to see the bottle.
This means they suspect the bottle and the magician has to be skilled to do his dirty work. There seems to be too much heat on the top. |

Was lucky enough to be in New York last month on my first ever trip to the USA and after much map searching and asking directions..(nobody new where it was) I finally found Tannens on 34th street and went inside.
Just by chance This trick was demo'ed to me and it just screamed gimmick. It just looked like a card on top of a bottle with a small brown glass tube on top...and a definite rattle noise when the card was removed. Suppose in a noisy pub and party situations this could be ok...but not for me... On a positive note, it was great to visit Tannens and I purchased Get Sharky which is great...but that's a different thread!! |

No offense to the guys at Tannens, but they obviously did not do this effect justice. Look guys, I didn't invent this & I really don't care if you get it or not... except for the fact that you are missing out on something great. Complain as much as you like, but it doesn't change the fact that this trick impresses the hell out of people. Yes, everybody wants to see the bottle afterwards and my handling and presentations make that not only possible, but practical and easy! If you are fortunate enough to view my complete performances you'll see that, in every case, the spectators are encouraged to inspect the bottle... because they can! There is nothing to be found. As I said, I don't care if you decide to pass on this awesome gimmick, but I just think there's too much petty nonsense being bantered about here. I have personally taken Devious out into the real world and consistently amazed everyone I've performed it for with multiple presentations. What more do you want?

I've been to many magic shops, including Tannen's. Sometimes these guys get so much stuff coming in that they don't/can't put the time into learning stuff at performance level.
It looked REALLY good on the demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79OIwrnVDPY&feature=plcp |

There is simply NO room to do justice using such a gimmick in the real world scenario. But that is just my opinion. There may be many who will love the effect and perform it well in the real world. Probably, like DanHarlan says "the guys at Tannen’s did not do justice", I too might have failed in doing justice to the effect: However the cap through neck is a strong effect. The gimmick is easy to handle and pull-off. That alone is worth the price of the trick. Just my opinion.

Thanks Zombie...guys I don't understand the problem here I have been running with this gimmick in my pocket pretty much every time I leave the house now and its great. If you can't get great reactions from this then its simply you as a performer. It's too easy to perform and as far as the gimmick fitting the bottle its an easy fix one trip to home depot to get a rubber tapered gasket and a little nifty work with a scapel it fixes the noise issue and the guess work if it fits the bottle as well. Not sure why this wasnt thought of when it was released (seemed obvious) but some of us guys catch on to these things. Good luck buy it or don't just like Dan says its a tasters choice trick.

Hey Guys,
I'm really sad for this effect... because I think it is brilliant in theory, but here in the UK has its severe drawbacks... which is a real shame. I watched the DVD and thought it was great - Dan Harlan and crew are great, cannot fault them, their ideas or presentations - my initial impression was 'THIS IS GOLDEN'... and the good news, it still can be. Unfortunately, the YES, incredibly clever gimmick provided falls short in England. I don't know about the beer bottles in America, but over here, I am yet to find a bottle that the cap fits in. It's not that the bottles are too wide, but too narrow! Simply, the fitting bit on the gimmick is too wide, by, about 1mm. I've tried it on about 10 brands of beer bottles... and it doesn't fit, which means this trick is totally non-impromptu. HOWEVER, there is a solution I feel I should talk about which will make the gimmick fit most beer bottles which isn't discussed on the DVD. I did this, and since, my gimmick fits a little better. I will have to carry around my own bottle, which is a bit of hassle, but at least it works, and I am able to do this great effect! Okay... what you need to do... is file down the gimmick base. Get a nail file, or metal file, and go around the 'r**g' for a few minutes. B filing away some of the material, I managed to make it thinner.. and BANG - it now fits my Budweiser Bottle!! A simple bit of DIY - if you have this effect - don't give up on it! It's not perfect... but... a decent addition to my arsenal. I just wish the ma****s were stronger!!!!!! ;(

Here's another idea:
Show a bottle with it's cap on. Clearly take the cap off, and set the bottle aside. The cap vanishes using your favorite method. They then look back down at the bottle, and the cap is back! It can even become a sealed bottle. This gimmick is great! |
