I'd like to make my own card (and possibly other items) production routine. Is there a good book or DVD that specializes in this kind of act?

Could be more clear on what you are looking for, routines or explaination of moves.

I'm looking for detailed explanations of moves though routines (with explanations) wouldn't hurt either. If they're available on YouTube or somewhere free online that would of course be preferably to purchasing a book or DVD. Alternatively do you know of any moves I can learn from YouTube? So far I've found are the back palm, the palm with interlaced fingers, the Tenkai Palm (1 card) and the palm where you hold cards with your middle finger and the base of the thumb and cover them with your index finger.

Of course it doesn't have to be cards. Candles, birds, CDs, wands, etcetera would also be helpful.

No, I do not know of any free learning video on YouTube. Do not try to learn anything from the videos on YouTube, most are not correct, and you will not be learning the correct methods.
Magic is just like any art, guitar, dance, piano, you need to pay for the proper methods and instructions. There is a lot of beginner books sold at the book stores that have some very good magic tricks in them. Most of the stage and manipulation DVD sets are around a $100.00 to purchase. |

Before you make your own card routine, learned all you can from the sources requested above. Pay for Jeff McBrides DVD. It's the best collection for what you need to know. Bill and I learned from Chavez school of magic (at different times of course). Books is not a bad source either. There are a lot of good ones out there.
Don't be in a hurry. Take yoru time and learn from the proper mediums. |

There is no free or easy way to do magic. You either buy or you find a mentor willing to teach. Do NOT learn from YouTube! I'm on Bills side on this one. Feel free to watch some of the better stuff on there but don't go learning from those this is how it's done video's.

The best _books_ on this subject are:
1) _Card Magic by Manipulation_ by Lewis Ganson (which was originally a chapter in Ganson's _Routined Manipulation Finale_, The technique for fan productions presented here was intended to be an improvement over the standard card manipulation technique that Ganson originally published in _Expert Manipulation of Playing Cards_. There is a suggested routine in the book. 2) _Expert Manipulation of Playing Cards_. This was, I believe, originally published in paperback. That edition is hard to find. However, it was reprinted in hardback in a larger format. It's available from Denny Haney's shop: http://dennymagic.com/store/expert-manip......rds.html This book goes into great detail about fan productions, single productions, fan flourishes... and presents ideas for routines. 3) _Card Fan Productions_ by Ed Marlo. A small, inexpensive paperback that has some good tips in it; solely card fan productions--no single card production techniques Let me also put in a plug for Henry Hay's _The Amateur Magician's Handbook_--not just because of the chapters on card manipulation (which are great), but also because of the chapters on magic theory. It is available in a paperback, pocket book-sised edition, but you should be able to find a used hardback copy at a decent price. There are other books that are not devoted exclusively to card productions but that have chapters or entries about them. For example, Dai Vernon's _More Inner Secrets of Card Magic_ available as a pdf at: http://www.lybrary.com/dai-vernons-more-......445.html has a section called "Mainly Manipulation" with an excellent technique for producing cards singly that is attributed to Cardini; also a production method from Allen Shaw, who I seem to remember that some authorities considered was better than Cardini. (Don't ask me to cite the source for that statement. It's been a long time since I read it and I'm not sure I can track it down. Perhaps someone else on the Café can document the source.) A good book (like Ganson's _Card Magic by Manipulation_) provides not only a description of moves, but also ideas for routines. The McBride DVDs are good. There was a nice instructional VHS video by Lou Lancaster, but I don't know if it's available any longer and don't know if it was ever transferred to DVD. I have not seen the instructional videos of Lou that the IMS (International Magic Society) lists, but you might contact them and see what they contain. As I recall, the production values of Lou's video were not the calibre of the Jeff McBride videos, but the content was great. There's a youtube Broken wand ceremony for Lou at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKqaifYC-Pg with a tribute by Jeff McBride. Jeff says at about 3:20 into the clip: "Much of my professional repertoire I learned from Lou. My card fans, my silent linking ring routine, my zombie..." That's quite an endorsement. I hope you find this information helpful. I don't think I would get all of these books/videos at one time. Start with maybe one book and one video and see what you can learn from that. Then add more resources as your skill increases. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I learned the split fans from Marlo's book. All of the other sources mentioned are great. If one wants to learn card manipulation, you can't beat them.

If it's a DVD you are looking for, I recommend "The Sheridan Course in Card Manipulation". This is a 3 DVD set and it not only teaches moves but Jeff tells about the history of the back palm.
