I usually wear a black sport coat when performing but in the summer months, especially in these 90* plus days I wear a short sleeve shirt and a vest....Anyway....I had finished entertaining a nice couple at my restaurant and moved on to the next table. The waitress told me the couple wanted me to stop back. Long story short, they asked me if I was available for a big party they were having the following weekend. The woman told me that the reason they wanted to hire me was because I was wearing short sleeves and couldn't believe the effects I was performing were without sleeves.
She mentioned to me that if I had been wearing a sport coat or had long sleeves that she would not have called me back to inquire about performing....The old saying "It's up your sleeve." holds very true for the layman when they see us perform. Because I was wearing short sleeves I got hired.

On the serious side, I think that's great! However, I had done a gig at an "Assisted Living Center" wearing my jacket, dress slacks, and dress shirt, and killed! When I called the lady back for a, hopefully, repeat gig she asked me if I had a tailcoat and a hat that I could wear the next time? I said yes and got the repeat booking. Go figure.

You can never tell with these things. In this case, the person wanted him because he didn't wear a coat. Other people might judge him because they felt he wasn't professionally dressed. You just never know. Be great and no matter how you're dressed, the work will follow.
Funny about sleeves. Dai Vernon said somewhere that "it's up his sleeve " was one of the greatest misconceptions punters have about Magicians. |

I never wear long sleeves. People often give me the same comment that the OP got. ..."and you do it with no sleeves!"

I'm usually in long sleeves, but they're always rolled up almost to my elbows. Yes, I get those comments all the time. "Wow, you did that with your sleeves rolled up!" I do it basically for theatrical purposes to give the impression that I'm working harder than I actually am. To a layman, or an amateur this may sound ridiculous. But I assure you a little bit of a psycological advantage goes a looooooong way.

I hope you have beautiful arms, no tattoos or hairy bushes growing everywhere. If so shave those arms. Nothing turns off most people like body hair all over the place. Remember to moisturize as well.

Umm Wow, You never cease to amaze me. What a nasty comment.
You do realize that MOST people have body hair don't you ? The people hired him specifically becuase they liked the fact he had no sleeves. Besides, I use my arm hair as a toppit! So I take this personally. |

Especially the Robbin Williams amount. If the restaurant manager tells you have to put a hair net on your arms, then you have to much. You take it personally, that is hoot who in the world was talking to you. |

My arms are only lightly hairy ever since my chemotherapy. And I have one tattoo that shows. It's of Dai Vernon, so.....I'd call that appropriate.

So tomorrow here in Dallas, it's supposed to be a brisk 107 degrees. I DO NOT perform in a suit from May - September. Staying true to my branding, here's my Summer outfit:
I also where black cargo shorts and my custom made All Stars: The black stripe on the heal of my shoes reads Got Magic? in bright yellow. I have had a number of people comment that they were impressed with my ability to do the impossible with no sleeves. Oddly enough, nobody seemed to care that I have hair on my arms...maybe that's cause I'm HUMAN and HUMANS have body hair.

OK Lyle, I'd hire you just for standing behind a table with your pants off! The bowling shirt works and your branding works very well. Nice photo. Man that sure is a small black diamond mellon you have there. I didn't know they grew them that small in Texas. Or is it just the seed?).
I think it is less important wether or your not you wear long or short sleeves, or long long sleeves rolled up to mid forearm or a colorful T-shirt. I doubt if it makes a hill of beans if you wear a jacket or not. If your magic is good, you are entertaining, and your personality is likable and memorable, then you are more like to get noticed and offered a job (if there is one to be offered). I personally think being clean, with good looking nails (if you do a lot of close-up), and groomed appropriately helps win the day and get the gigs. BTW I believe that Bill was making an attempt at being funny.
