Thanks guys,
I went today to the gig and everyone was really nice and everyone really enjoyed my magic. Only one family tipped, everyone else was really old, maybe they didn't want to(shrug). The restaurant was small and really slow dining, however a lot of people including the waiters gave positive feedback to the owner and manager. I will talk to them next Wednesday about the "details". ~Shizam http://www.ShizamsMagic.com |

Last night, I tried something new and it was a smashing success...
I have probably 1000s of little bunny paddles b/c I teach it when I teach my Magic Class. I have more of these then I'll ever need and I want to get rid of them (and didn't want to throw them away) so I decided to give them out as "gift magic" to the tables I performed at that had children. I'd perform the trick and then quickly teach the kids how to do it. So for giving away a 3 cents bunny paddle and spending an extra minute or two at the table teaching their child a trick, I was averaging about $20 - $30 per table last night whereas if I hadn't done that, it may have only been $5 - $10. Understand that I didn't go into it with that expectation, it just worked out that way.

I would never teach magic in a restaurant as part of my act. Unless it was a magic class and I set up a class for publisity reasons.

I too would not teach effects to the guests/children, although I've been asked hundreds of times to do so. I don't know, I think it changes the attitude from them seeing me as a professional magician to a guy that can do some cool tricks. I never show them how it's done.
......I can't "just give" the secret away...they would have to earn my confidence and show genuine "respect" and interest. Those are the kids that sit in the audience and yell " I KNOW HOW YOU DO THAT!!!!!!! No respect for the art or the secret. Just my opinion, no disrespect intended.

Glenn,
I thought we agreed to stay out of each others threads! If I wanted your opinion, then I would have asked for it. Go away and annoy somebody else. You're opinion doesn't matter to me and I could care less what you think! I would rather listen to an ignorant 12 year old You Tuber ramble on about magic and would take his opinion over yours. Now to reply to someone who does matter... Quote:

Understand that most of my customers are now like my 2nd family...they come in week after week to watch me perform. Their children are now very interested in magic. Many of them have already had their parents buy them a Magic Set...all b/c they have been watching me perform week after week. I would never teach someone a trick if I didn't feel like they didn't respect me or the secret. It takes an extra 2 minutes to perform/teach this trick and gives them so much joy b/c now THEY have the ability to do something that their friends and parents cannot do. It gives them a great feeling of pride and who knows, they might just grow up and be the next biggest thing in magic...all from a stupid rabbit paddle.

As I was saying I have only used the "teaching" magic class in a restaurant situation to bring publisity to the restaurant that I am working at. I have found the "magic class" to be a very good thing for both the restaurant and myself. I really does make a very good connection with the guests that is different than just doing tricks at the table (I am talking about myself now). Plus it is a good way to advertise the restaurant - I have gotten newspaper publisity for doing it. Cheers!

I also don't do balloons in a restaurant. Used to - but not for years. Tips can also depend on the place your working. I have found that the night club style restaurant tips better than the Piza kids night style of place. Also I talked to Bill Goldman a few times on restaurants and he said that a magician should work a restaurant for two reasons. Tips or business contacts. I think what Bill Goldman said was very interesting.

Also back in the old days when I was working in Houdini's pub with Bill Malone. Everyone had a tip jar. This was the only place I ever worked that everyone had a tip jar.
Then also there was a friend who did Matrix with borrowed quarters - when he returned the quarters he acted like he was tipping the guy or girl that lent him the quarters for the trick. Me I never went after tips - and if they tipped me I would try to return it and ask them to tell the management how much they enjoyed the show - instead of the tip. Often they would tip and tell the management how much they enjoyed the show. I also go the extra expence of having my own comment cards that I have some guests fill out. And I send them to the home office just about every other month. Besides the mailing list - I find that this is good business for the magic restaurant style gig.

Its not unusual for me to get $10.00 and $20.00 tips, when other magicians working the sme venue aren't doing as well. I really think the variety of inexpensive give away items I hand out to the children makes a big difference on tips. For example, I found plastic jumbo coins that are very cheap in bulk. I magically produce them and the parents magically tip.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

I also give away paddles after the trick is finished. It has my name and info on it and their first name. Haven't thought about teaching it. BTW, totally ignoring is the best way to go.
