Perhaps it is because I have performed in more places other than kid nights at the local Pizza joint. Still - tips do come and I shall expand on a few things about performing in restaurants in another thread. Cheers!

Wait, am I the 12 year old? lol
jk on a serious note, How much should I charge if any to a restaurant for 2 hours of magic? only tips? the last restaurant I went to I got two Birthday Gigs, so it was a good investment. What is your logic on this? I just wanted to thank you all for the entertaining comments ~Shizam http://www.ShizamsMagic.com |

Charge what you are happy with and they are willing to pay you. So many factors involved. You are just starting. The experience ha more valuable than the money.

I rarely accept a tip. I usually refuse a tip telling the client that the management pays me more than enough to entertain you.
In fact, there is no tip I could get that wouldn't insult me and some of the tippers look like they couldn't afford it. The wait staff usually gets a better tip when I work, and that is good, as they will steer you to an appreciative table and build you up. ------- So, I would let the owners or managers know that you do not want tips and that your audience will want to return if they feel that there is no obligation for being entertained.

Enjoyed the podcast but the approaching a table line you used, well, you're right, it probably only works for you. ) When I pitched my restaurants I mentioned to the owner/manager that I don't solicit tips. I want the wait staff to know I'm not competing with them. Tips for them "IS" their salary. ALSO...I want regulars to come in to see me "OFTEN". When they know they are not obligated to tip they do just that, especially families with the kiddies.......... So you can use this advice for negotiating a fee for your services when you speak to the powers-to be. I also want to mention that I too turn down tips initially (graciously) . Some will offer me a tip and I say, as magicians said above, "Thank you, but the management pays me to entertain you". Some will thank me and return the tip to their pocket. Others will insist and even go as far as putting the tip in my pocket. In this scenario I graciously accept. You can tell the difference between the obligatory tip and the enthusiastic tip. As far as fees, Danny Doyle said it best. You are just staring out but also don't sell yourself short. You do have worth but you've got to prove it. When I started out, my very first restaurant gig, I charged $100.00 for 3 hours plus a free meal. I brought a few dollars home in tips as well. Just an example for ya. Have fun...It's a wonderful life!!

This has turned into a childish and embarassing discussion. Hopefully the youngsters who are interested in doing magic as a career someday are not reading through this. Can we turn this back to a more positive and productive conversation?

I sure hope so. Lets give it a shot you and I ok?
I don't think soliciting tips, no matter how clever you do it is cool. Just my viewpoint. I don't turn them down ever. Often a tip is as much about the person tipping as the person getting tipped. They want to do it and sometimes want to be seen doing it. I don't want to deprive them of that. I am gracious, I never look at it and I simply say thank you.

Looking beyond the borders of the US, aren't there places where tipping is primary way to earn? I have recollection of a thread long ago where somebody from central or south America mentioned working for tips was the norm.

Many places in the US tips alone can work. It is individual case by cae basis as far as I am concerned.
