For the last couple of weeks the only time I go out is to grave visit, fill out forms, and take training and job pogram tests. You know, typical english, logic, and math. The part of the test that puzzled me was the math. It had word questions, division, sequencing puzzles, averaging etc. They let people use their calculators on their phones. Why bother giving the test? One question of "can you use a calculator?" Should cover it.

Do you think calculators should be allowedin the intent of the test is to see if someone can do highschool math?

Sometimes these tests are more in seeing if the person taking the test can follow directions.

I remember those. First line says "read entire test" and the last page says "leave test blank and read or do homewok". My cohort in ruining test bell curves read and giggled while others took the test wondering why we didn't.

Once I took a test that asked me what I would do in a challenging situation. The question was so vague that I gave them 15 possible answers. I later found out that the purpose of this question was to see how quick you can think on your feet, and three answers was a passing grade. LOL

During one job interview I was given an impossible scenario and asked what I'd do. The only correct answer was "tell my supervisor the problem." Chain of command was important to them.

The reality is we are surrounded by calculators. Every phone, pod, pad and computer has one. What's the use of testing without one?

That is my point, why bother? The only people I ever met who use math on paper are, which suprised me, were construction workers. The test part on math just shows calculator use. I have not checked but t bet there are sites you can type a sentence and it will tell you what words are nouns. People at store will see 20% of and not know what it is and I will tell them an they seem shocked. How har is it to figure out 20% of $10.00?

I used to be pretty good at adding and subtracting and multiplying in my head from that Mega Math book. The problem is that once you get to the division section it's so riddled with typos and poor instruction as to be pretty much useless. I emailed the author for clarification but he's too busy counting his money to bother replying.
Lesson: NEVER buy Mega Math.
