Like many people who are preserving the past, I do not get the sense that you live in it!
That being said, as a steward of nostalgic entertainment, how do you see its role in relation to other forms of entertainment, particularly those involving technological advances? Chris |

Good question and if I understand it properly...I LOVE the time I grew up in granted...the 1950's were awesome for a kid to feel wonder and excitement at every turn...however personally it was MAN MADE wonders that thrilled me as a kid. I was exposed to natures wonders as well but was always more interested in what some genius could come up with, say at the 1964 World's fair for example. When I was first able to take my daughter Andi to Disneyland, yeah it was for the fantasy but more importasnt was to show her and integrate into her the hieght of accomplishment that could be attained by technology and talent and attitude...used to not only capture but retain the best of America and put it on display.
Not to get too far off your question but I think the technology aspect is key to contemporary enjoyment BUT ONLY if it can stretch the imagination beyond everyday experiences and knowledge yet keep the values that made it possible in the first place. I don't care for the technology wasted on catering to low-life expectations. The Transformers ride is a great example of strapping your butt in a 'car' and sending you off in the dark but not just to see a skull pop up as a light bulb goes off...but take that dark ride experience to the a thermonuclear level and put YOU INTO a multi million dollar spectacle...it is fantastic from any aspect. This, is really the same thing done so long ago with the Snow White ride at DL...to put YOU in the movie...these days you ARE REALLY in the movie. Fabulous. For me, who grew up in Nostalgia times...it all links together, from my first dark ride at South Beach, Staten Island NY...to the wonderful efforts of Walt Disney at the World's Fair to the new dazzling effects l;aden motion enhanced rides at Universal...one line...unbroken. My idea of the whole magilla is epitomized by Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood. Both not only just try to make money (as they should) but take real joy in providing a fantastic experience for the more sophisticated guests as well. They don't scrimp to appeal to those who'll accept less...they shoot for the moon. As evidensed by the new attractions at Univ. We have not ridden the Carsland expansion yet (next month) but I'm sure it's killer tech.
