Hi I am new to magic. When I was young I would sit and try to figure out how many of the magic tricks I saw were done. Some I knew and others I did not. Even knowing the secret of the trick did not reduce the enjoyment of it. I especially loved sleight of hand the fact that presentation, speed of hand, and control of perspective would trick the mind so easily gave me great joy.
After a long time I decided to finally try these amazing things. I understand the basics of how it works and I have found some books in the library and online. I have noticed though most of these show the trick only. I was wondering if there were any exercises that are common to a lot of different tricks that I could be doing daily to improve my dexterity. Right now I have been practicing palming with some small foam balls and some ping pong balls. I keep practicing the back palm for card appearances and disappearance. Basically I am saying I have the finger dexterity of a fish and I am looking for the best way to improve it.
Also does anyone have a suggestion on the coin size to start out with for trying to roll it over your fingers I keep putting peoples eyes out as I try it and the coin shoots off in a random direction.

Practice with coins. Depends on the size of your hands. Small? Fifty-cent coins. Large? Dollar size. I use dollar, which makes fifty cent easier.

Also, playing the piano will generally give you greater dexterity.

Get a book on cards or coins that start with basics. Try Royal Road To Card Magic and Modern Coin Magic. Both books are very cheap and are classics amongst the magic community

Keep a palmed coin in your hand all the time. Practice coin rolls. Just find a size of coin that you are comfortable with.

Someone here suggested practicing coin moves over a sewer grate or at the edge of a bridge.

Another suggestion I read here was to put Corn Husker's Lotion on your hands. Seems to help me.
