What an innovative fellow! I have no idea if the idea will fly or not, but this gentleman stepped up to the plate when he perceived a need or desire. It definitely fills a void. I find his logic & reasoning sound. The quality also appears to be 1st rate. I wish him the best of luck in this endeavor.
Please see the current Ebay listing for Tenyo 'Ultra Tube'. Once again, apologizes for not providing a direct link. Man, I gotta learn that comp skill. What is everyone's opinion on this? |

Although I agree that the work being done by ---- looks great there might be a problem due to copyright issues as the artwork on the packaging is copyrighted. That prolific author who often posts here has even stated that one of the problems in writing a book on Tenyo is artwork copyright issues.

I have seen the quality of the work up close, and he does a fantastic job on the reproductions. He is always fair to point out that they are reproductions and does not try to pass them off as original- this is an important point! Independent of his artistic talents, he is fantastic person to deal with, and I have purchased many Tenyo effects from him.

If you're referring to this recently closed auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll......ue&rt=nc , then I agree with you 100%. Amazing reproduction by 'funstuffonly'. Almost looks as good as John Mazza's Tenyo Sherlock Holmes rendition of Future Clock ;-)

Yup, that's the 1 Dave. Thanx for the link. It either sold super fast or got yanked super fast. Totally agree with your statement 'Amazing reproduction'. Funstuffonly is showing the utmost respect to the originals as far as I can tell & seems to craft with care & detail. I also commend his straight-forwardness. There is zero attempt by him at deception as Meridianfan aptly pointed out. Kudos. HP Lovecraft voiced my concerns re copyright.
2 questions...Is there a sustainable market? Will this impact the resale price of old originals? |

If Tenyo thinks it is a violation of their copyright, they will do something about it.
But the long term question for collectors is not these immediate sales, but what happens when these things are RESOLD as original pieces in original packaging. This has happened in the collectable world many times. Several generations of collectors onward, you can't be able to tell if something is original or a copy. I have spent many years writing a book on Theodore DeLand. His card tricks were conterfeited by so many people, that I sometimes have a hard time telling the original from a copy of they were both made 100 years ago. |

Now you mention that it's true that someone with bad intentions will use this package for sale as original pieces but don't forget that there is not part of the blister. But for sure you can change old torn opened package to a brand new one sealed with this reproduction.
It say that "Every REPACK has "Reproduction" printed on the inside in both English and Japanese", I thought it was a good idea at first but now that you mention the RESOLD problem I think that this does not make sense because this is the part that is glued and completely invisible for buyer. So, Maybe this statement should be placed on the visible part only to the copies sold to strangers on ebay. Or maybe put a logo, number, or discreetly change a color or place the drawings in other place. There are no simple solutions. Despite all the work is superb. And for someone like me who love the packaging and loves to expose it, it's great. Bravo to your work. |

There is no question that these reproductions will be sold and resold, and within the near future make their way onto eBay as "original packaging."
That's why it is IMPERATIVE that the words "FACSIMILE OF ORIGINAL PACKAGING" be printed on the back in a prominent place. At least that way, if someone on eBay sells it as original, the buyer will recognize what it is (hopefully) and be able to return it. |

A person might even be able to lift off the printed REPRODUCTION on the inside with transparent tape and no one would be able to tell the difference. Perhaps creating just a slight mar to the inside surface.

Do not forget that there is no blister AND the cardboard is not cut. And cut a Cardboard in perfect and professional manner is virtually impossible without the appropriate tools. As soon as there has curves is hell.
