Anyone know if Mandolin plans to put out an assorted deck of gaffs. I'm slowly (and begrudgingly) replacing my bycile gaffs and would rather get a deck with a mixture of the standard gaffs rather that make single purchases

The USPCC may not be coming out with an offical assorted deck but it's a sure thing that before long, some dealer will independently (and begrudgingly) compile the various gaffs into a Mandolin Assortment Deck.

John, may I meekly ask why you are giving up Bicycle gaffs? I have this in both red and blue, plus the Ghost Deck and the DVD "Army Of 52". Check this out:
http://www.ellusionist.com/bicycle-gaff-deck.html Guys, as long as these are available, I will NEVER use Mandolins! You won't believe the cool things you can do...just "The Zipper" card...sheesh, makes me want to get better at card sleights! If ya know a DL, an Elmsey, or Jordan Count, or even just a simple Flushtration, this deck has 52 miracles in it! Well, not 52 exactly, but more than I can use in a lifetime! Just slip one of these into an ordinary deck, and really, it sure beats "pick a card..."! Some of it is downright spooky, especially if you use the Ghost Deck & Gaffs! One Bicycle Ghost Card alone, added to a regular deck has amazing possibilities! Check out the Ghost Deck! http://www.ellusionist.com/bicycle-ghost......eck.html And this is the ULTIMATE...I don't have this yet: http://www.ellusionist.com/ultragaff-tri......dvd.html That's my next card purchase! I just gave you a WEALTH of info! Hope you can use it! Ellusionist is a GREAT source, and Brad Christian is the top of his class! Doug |

Doug I'm not giving up on Bikes it just seems the last three or four gimmicks I got were made with Mandolin's and I read that USPCC is no longer making gaffed cards. I'll take a look at your links today.
Thanks - John

They will still be making many Rider Back gaffs, just not the ones that change the artwork on the back of the card, or the faces of the Ace of Spades or the Jokers.
Double-backers, double-faced cards, blank variations, split faces, split backs, etc. will all still be made. |

Plus there is a guy in Germany that makes gaffs for Bicycles! I'm glad someone took the reins and made Mandolins. But...I'm a Bicycle Card kinda guy! And Ellusionist...whoa! I've got to replace the Army Of 52 DVD I lost in the foreclosure, plus get the Ultra-Gaff deck and 3-DVD series! I've already got more gaffs than I can use in a LIFETIME!
Do yourself a favor, John. Check out Ellusionist! Doug |

I have already asked in some other post, but never got any replies. So I'm trying again...
I own both the Gaff and Ultra Gaff packs mentioned by Doug in this thread. But, after a while, many cards started to be "sticky" in such a way that you cannot fan them anymore and cannot rely on many sleights. In other words they have become useless! I tried rubbing them back and forth on cloths, jeans, close-up mats and what have you, but no result. I swear I have always kept them in dry places (the same where I keep all my packs), use them after washing my hands and so on ... It clearly is a problem with the finish of the card. Being gaffed were they printed somewhere outside the USPCC? Any idea why this happened? Any advice? Anyone else had the same experience? Actually I also have (but to a much lesser extent) the same problem with the cards I got directly from John Bannon when I bought his Royal Scam packet trick... Thanks mlippo |

Interesting, Mlippo, I've never had that problem. Someone once said to use some sort of "wax" if it's humid where you live. I lived in Florida for 20 years, and I never had a problem. The Bicycle "air-cushion finish" seems to be on all my gaffs and my John Bannon Stranger's Gallery cards, so I really don't have an answer.
Hopefully, someone here will enlighten us... Doug |

Doug I just checked out the Ellusionist decks and my mind is spinning! Love the "skull kings" and already have a use in mind for them! Who says card tricks are boring???

Hey John!
I LOVE the Zipper Card. I absolutely blew someone away with just that a couple years ago. The reverse logo on the Bicycle Box, with the matching card (non-reversed) is another one! There is a card with Eight Of Hearts written in the design on the back of one card! What a reveal THAT is! And, there is one I really love...you tear a circular piece off of a blue card (the bicycle), and it magically fuses to a red card! It can be examined! The possibilities...also there is a Six Of Spades that looks 100 years old... Those are really the only ones I have had time to play with. Now the Ghost Gaff Deck...almost the same. A few differences. I love the Ghost Deck! The ungimmicked one. Beautiful. Gotta get the UltraGaff stuff this payday. There is another gaff Bicycle Deck I'm looking through right now. This deck...let's see here. The CAJ Magic Gaff Cards...comes in red Bicycle. These are different. There is a red and blue version of Skinners Monte Cards, Twisted Sisters gaffs in Kings and Jacks, 2 1/2 of Clubs, Spades, Hearts and Diamonds in red and a 2 1/2 of Clubs in blue...1/2 a spade in red and blue. That's right, HALF a spade! Ha! And, ready for this? ZERO of Hearts, Clubs Diamonds and Spades! Beautiful! They even included a 52 on one card! 15 Bucks at Penguin! http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S32 Check out the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMnrYCVKwHc Look on the right side for more gaff deck vids! Doug, Did you end up getting the DVD set or are you just coming up with your own uses for the gaffs?

Mlippo,
Regarding your 'sticky' cards: this is just an untested thought, but have you considered a light dusting with fanning powder? It's worked for me in the past in similar circumstances. You might test on just one card; maybe use a cotton ball with a very little powder on it. Then test that card by itself before treating any others. I've heard of too much fanning powder clumping up and causing its own problems, so a light application might be best. If other folks have more experience here, I'd like to hear their ideas, too. I do not own fanning powder since I have never used it. I might borrow some and try it one one card as you suggest although I read somewhere else here on the Café that it would probably make things worse ... Thanks anyway! mlippo |

A DL or Top Change is all that's needed. A Card Box is great for the "aged" card. I don't do a good enough Erdnase. That's knacky. That is a great way to reveal a change. A Flushtration Count works when one card is ungaffed and the rest are. An Emsley, when one card is to be hidden. However, I recommend The Army Of 52. It just belongs with the Gaffed Deck! Ya know, Danny Garcia is ONE SICK DUDE! I can't wait to see what he and Wayne Houchin have come up with! Just to make it easier, I have copied the Overview: If you have the chance to have USPC/Ellusionist make you anything you want - you take it. You put all the ingenuity you can into the design of the cards. You take the process that made "Stigmata" and "Fraud" what they are today, and apply it to playing cards. UltraGaff is a deck of specialized playing cards, 'gaffed' cards, that are meant to fit in quietly with a normal deck of Bicycle playing cards. On this page you can purchase the DVD training that allows you to perform the exact tricks that Danny and Wayne created for each of the cards in the UltraGaff Deck. There are 3 volumes, all over an hour long. (Vol-3 is one hour and forty minutes). Each volume stands alone, or can be purchased in a complete set of 3. The volumes progress in difficulty, but you can find easy material in each volume as well. Many sleights are taught in the videos and there is an abundance of rare teaching from these two masters; subtleties, tricks of the trade, ways to get in and out of a routine with gaffs --- ETC. Get all 3 DVD's at the same time and get your ($29.95) UltraGaff Deck for free during our special promotion. You'll be on your way to impossible card magic that is new, outside-the-box, and outrageously creative. I might just get the special. This is just too good... |

You sure you're not working for Ellusionist? Just kidding, but you might want to ask for a commision after I order. I see you're from Augusta, just got back to (Gloucester) Massachusetts after 28 years in the Air Force. Love being back on the East Coast, but I've found out that humidity and cards don't mix.

They seem to have corrected their faults, and have become one of the greatest magic sites on the 'net! I cannot help but recommend them as highly as I do Penguin Magic. Brad showed me kindness early on (2003?), and was very helpful with Crash Course. I had a ton of questions and he answered them all! An employee of Ellusionist even emailed me to check on me, and see if I still had any questions. I was astounded! I was right there when they released the Gaffed Deck. I got the red and the blue and the Army Of 52 (Hey, POETRY! Ha!). I hold Brad Christianson in the highest of honor! Wayne and Danny are great guys as well! I tend to go on and on, but you have to understand...you don't find companies like Penguin and Ellusionist very often, in this world of greed and corruption. Doug |
