I ahve occasionally used what I cal a Flip-Flop Shuffle in which piles of cards in the hand are turned face up or down in apparent random fashion (even by a spectator) but does not chnage the order. I notice that several effects By Columbini use this shuffle, but all are kids effects.
Does this Shuffle work? Does it convince a spectator the the cards are "now in a mess?" If used before a sophisticated audience as part of a mentalism effect would it enhance the magic?

If it's the shuffle it sounds like (slop shuffle?), I use it in my in hands Triumph and it works just fine if done kind of sloppily with good timing in a casual manner.
The Slop Shuffle does change the order though, so it may not be the one I'm imagining. You could easily retain a top stock. It keeps half the deck face up and half face down separated (but not mixed together as is the impression given). I've seen it done successfully in a lot of adult effects . -Mary Mowder |

Eric Mead has a version of this shuffle in his book: "A Tangled Web." It allows the performer to restore the order of a full deck memorized deck stack after a single riffle shuffle by a spectator. It takes some concentration, but works beautifully.
