I'm needing some patter suggestions for the Rich Young Ruler text (sometimes called simply, The Rich Man) -- Mark 10:17-31. I illustrate the text I'm peaching on by using a standard trick before the "regular" sermon. It is ususally geared to adults, but, of course, children will enjoy it.
Any help -- trick and/or patter suggestions -- will be appreciated! Thanks! Dean (Chaucer) |

How about using the text from scripture.
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[a]” 20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[b] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Just on the top of my head, after reciting the scripture you can then demonstate by performing "Eye Of The Needle" rope trick
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

I will frequently refer to "The Message" version of Scripture to help in my biblical storytelling. One should be careful though as the The Message is a not a word for word translation but a version. It has it's place though and I find it useful.
Regarding an effect, I believe there is a gospel effect that illustrates this Christ encounter. Maybe a search in the good news forum might yield a result. Try camel as a search word. Try this topic: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=16 Peace, phill

I searched and searched... but could not find it. At the FCM convention in Marion probably two years ago?, I purchased from one of the dealers a DVD that had on it a really clever story of "The Rich Young Ruler" using a real folding contractors ruler as the "object lesson" for the patter. The patter was very, very clever, entertaining, and had a good Gospel lesson. I did purchase the DVD, and later purchased from Lowe's a folding contractors ruler. I watched the DVD at home- it was great! The ruler was folded into various positions/designs for the retelling of the story- using an "up" arrow, a cross (the ruler was folded into the cross shape), etc.. I do not remember all the designs now.
Anyway, I cannot find that DVD now, it's in my junk room someplace (an entire basement). But that routine came to mind immediately. Clever, and tells the whole story. Not a magic trick, but a routine using a folding ruler for the Rich Young Ruler story. Maybe someone can remember the name of the DVD that had this routine on it, or the guy on it who did it (who had several other children's church routines on it as well involving various other objects), or the name of the dealer who was selling it (it was not Laflin, Ginn, Mitchell, Alexander, etc.). I think a church may have put it out- it looked like videotaping of an energetic children's pastor doing these terrific routines there. Any help out there?- I'd like to order another DVD online of this routine (I was unable to locate it via a Google search). |
