Copperfield, Copperfield, Copperfield. And if you only have time to see one show see Copperfield. Did I mention Copperfield? Unless you have seen him before of course in which case go see him again. (Copperfield).

Just my take on things, I know many will disagree with me or try to tell me I hit them on a bad day. Been there too many times over the years and nothing has changed. AS always, just my opinion. Iven

I think someone may have mentioned once or twice but Mac King is a great bang for your buck. Great show entertaining, clean fun for all.

The thing I like about him is that he started off doing magic as a little kid (as did most of us, I think, so there's a common link there) and his show focuses on CLASSIC magic effects updated for a modern audience. So there's a bird routine (produce bird, bird transforms into silk, silk flys around the auditorium, lands in a cage and transforms back into a bird), a swallowed razor blade to thread routine, a "cutting the girl in half", a production of a chosen motorcycle, a really updated cups and balls routine, and a ton of other stuff. The cirque du soleil aspect lent an aura of odd mystery to the whole thing. I honestly can't understand why this show got so many 1 star reviews. The audience I saw it with seemed to have a great time, and my kids (9 and 7) LOVED it to the point that one of them wants to be a magician when he grows up Anyway, just my opinion. Hope you had fun in Vegas, whatever you ended up doing!

I would go along with those who suggested Mac King. It's worth studying him to see how effortless he makes things look. As far as magic shops, I'd go for Denny & Lee before Houdini, no contest. Used to recommend Lance Burton but that's not an option anymore. Gambler's General Store is worth a visit as well. They always have some interesting things...I've also found they sometimes have very good prices on decks of cards.
Just adding my 3 cents worth because anybody can add their 2 cents worth...

I liked Murry Sawchucks show at the Tropicana. I got a BYGO coupon. He did some big illusions in a very intimate setting. Very personable guy as well.

I'll be back in a couple of weeks...as always, I'll be hitting Spinnetti's. It's literally across the street from the Gamblers' General Store, and you can buy casino cards...unclipped, undrilled...for a buck or two a deck.
Boomer's is not what it used to be, but I'll still be there Wednesday night.

I could recommend some "magic shows" but go see some non magic shows, immerse yourself in what is entertainment. See a Cirque show, watch a street performer, see one of the free shows on the strip and watch the faces of the people. Magic shops? Denny & Lee's is great but you have to go see the shops at the Riveria and Stratosphere, they are tourist shops but to see demonstrators Dennis Sowers & Mike Abston demonstrate, that's where the real magic education takes place.

I second Charlie Martin's comments. The guys at the stratosphere were great to watch and good to talk to. Mac King at Harrah's is a must to see fun/family side of magic and Penn & Teller at Rio's is everything you'd expect.
The downside to magician residencies at casinos is the acts don't change much over the years, but that's how a solid performance is created. ps just realised how old this thread is so this is probably not useful info anymore. ah well. |

If you're there the third Thursday of the month, check out Jeff McBride's Wonderground at the Olive in nearby Henderson. It's $10 for two stage shows and a close-up show, with a rotating line-up that includes Jeff, Bizzaro, Luna Shimada, and whoever decides to stop by on any particular night.

Go see some shows, but not just magic. You can see a lot of different street performers just on the strip. And if you really want to experience some excitement, get a $500 table stake and play some craps! You might lose it all, but it will be a great adrenalin rush while it lasts. Who know, you might win enough to buy some more shows tickets.

Mac King is a must, fantastic Comedy Magician! You should also try and see some Cirque du Soleil shows as they are just amazing. A few other great acts are:
Dirk Arthur - white tigers & Vegas' largest illusion!...He's a great guy as well, very genuine. Copperfield Rick Thomas Just a shame Lance Burton isn't performing any more as his show was without doubt one of the best in my opinion. Hope you have a great time
