I have the cups on my table as flash. I never perform them as a closer. I prefer them almost
as filler in the middle of my sets, but mostly when I'm asked, "Hey what do you do with those?"

My final loads are eyeballs. Here is how I get there, "Have you ever heard someone say that the hand is quicker
than the eye, Well that's just not true, because we have several eyes right here that beat my hands to the cups."
(as I lift each cup to reveal light up eyeballs) You can throw in a few quips like, "Say that was a great EYE-Dea right?"
I have several eyepieces, goggles, magnifying glasses, compasses, etc...items which I make reference to with gags
and comments all of this furthers the eyeball gag at the end.

On occasion, I also use eggs as my loads and then reveal the current and trendy "Angry Birds"
as my finale. I would suggest even having a themed garment reveal to further accentuate your final loads,
("Angry Bird" t-shirt/hat/tie/shoes/silk/earrings/rings/socks whatever matches your theme, etc...)

I am often right next to "Birdman" (a gentleman who allows you to take pics with his birds.
My theme is a perfect tie in to a nearby attraction etc...find your theme with something relevant to
your surroundings.

When I perform at Legoland here in Carlsbad,California, I use cups made out of Legos and little
figures from the Legoland sets, in addition to sometimes using the Legoland Star Wars themes etc..
These are just a few ideas for you to gain some inspiration from, if you are inclined to move away
from the standard presentations.

My talented and creative friend David Regal uses cheap plastic red, yellow, and blue cups as his final load reveals,
whilst he relates the story of how he used to perform as a child this ancient magic trick with simple inexpensive cups.
It's one of the most touching stories of cups and balls I've ever seen.

I don't think that we should outright dismiss the cups, but I can certainly
relate to the overuse of cups on the pitch. I guess this makes me an,

I am far less experienced in Street performing than you Devious, however I have a few observations about the Cups and Balls that I would like to point out about why they are so overused.

1. The noise draws more people and builds bigger crowds. I believe it was Cellini who said that the Cups and Balls arouse something primal in people, that they will cross busy streets to find out what is making all that noise (when they are properly banged that is).

2. The routines themselves force the magician to interact with his/her audience a lot. He/She is not required to create a show where he/she interacts, it is done for them.

3. The cups make nice eye candy on a table. In fact in my show I display the cups, and each of my other props I will be using, on the table. I only use the table for performing the cups and balls. Each prop is put away as it is used.

4. I ask every audience I work for if they have ever seen this trick, you know what? In the last 4 weeks I have had 3 people say they have seen it before, three. I think we as Magicians tend to forget that the things that seem over used and "Old Hat" to us, are not to normal audiences.

Now, I do agree that every street performer in the world uses them at some point or another but there is a reason for it. It works. How many street guys use a Silk Vanish to stop a crowd and build an edge? Probably as many as use Cups and Balls, no? Keep in mind I am not disagreeing, I am simply offering up some reasons as to why it is the way it is.

G'day

I am just concluding an 8 week trip through Ireland, UK, Europe, Malaysia and Indonesia. I took with me a show that required no table and as I went along I kept reducing it - in terms of the number of props and the amount of room required to carry them. It has bee a great experience revaluating my show on the road and making modifications. I plan to put up a post about my trip and the lessons learned when I get back to OZ.

In regard to Cups and Balls and creative approaches etc - For my show that I perform at festival type events in Australia, I am considering a routine with a chop cup or possibly something that works as a Chop Cup but is maybe a baked bean can or similar - it is nice to have some time to do some creative dreaming/thinking while in transit and writing the ideas down for later reflection.

Nice chatting and reflecting with you all.

Here is what happened when folks grew tired of my cups & balls routine,

Nonetheless, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, so I changed it.

I've posted this in the past, but here is a little guy in India doing it his way.
I gauran-damn-tee, he has never heard any of the names folks mention when it comes to cups.

Devious,

I have to admit, my street cups and balls routine started out as the Gazzo Variation of the Vernon Routine. Each week something in it changes and it becomes a little more mine. I guess the reason is that I am in a situation where any prop I purchase needs to pay for itself and it needs to start paying right away! However as I work, the routine changes and becomes more and more mine.

A couple of friends of mine confirmed that the culture over there
looks down on these kids and they don't do very well; despite there
charming performance.

A science fiction writer (can't Google the actual quote to find his name, sorry.) had a fan going on about Indian philosophy.
His response was; "The problem with Indian philosophy, is that it produced India."
"There's no time to lose," I heard her say.
"Catch your dreams before they slip away."
"Dying all the time, lose your dreams and you could lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?"
