Okay, please excuse the awful pop reference in the subject.
It is late August and we are gearing up for the Café Book of the Year Award. But the face of publishing has changed such that I feel that e-books have been ignored and that is just not right to me. So this year, we are going to change that! E-books are every bit as important as physical books. Each conveys information and as such, each is equally important to furthering our endless exploration of the art. Basically the same rules will apply as with the physical book award, namely: 1. The e-book MUST have been written and published in 2012. 2. One vote per member per e-book. 3. If for any reason the author of the e-book is banned from the Café, the e-book is disqualified in keeping with Café policy. Any problems with this can be addressed to the admins. 4. Members must have at least 50 posts on the Café to vote. Also in keeping with Café policy, and easily tracked, these posts do not include those made in the for sale section of the Café or the welcome area as these do not count toward a member's post count. I am implementing this to minimize spamming and other nonsense. 5. There are no nominations as such. Your vote IS your nomination. 6. Voting will begin on 31 December 2012 and end on 31 January 2013 Hawai'i time. Votes cast before or after those dates will not be considered. Optional but encouraged: Please write a sentence or two or even paragraphs if you are verbose like I am detailing why you think the book deserves the award. I think that doing such a thing serves a number of purposes: it educates the community, it helps authors to have some feedback on their work, and I like to read other's thoughts. We have a knowledgeable community here so let's share the wealth. For years now we have had the privilege of reading superb e-books by Peter Duffie (the man who really pioneered it), Cameron Francis, Raphael Czaja, Aldo Colombini, and many more. It is well past time that these authors receive recognition for their work. Please note that the e-books are not restricted to a specific area of magic. A book about theory is as fair game as a book of effects. Mentalism and magic are one and the same for the purposes of this award. This is not the official thread for the voting. It's just an announcement. The official thread will be created on 31 December. I really hope this garners more awareness of e-books! Note: I should mention that e-books converted from previously published physical books do NOT count. L&L has just gotten into the e-book arena but I foresee a potential problem with people voting for digital versions of The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley, etc. So, the e-book cannot have begun life as a physical book. Very cool, Vlad. Glad to see that ebooks will get some love this year.
Heck, I think you should name the award after Peter. Call it The Duffie. As you stated, he pioneered the magic ebook and has produced more quality electronic publications than any other magician I can think of.

Vlad, what a brilliant idea! I also love 'The Duffie' suggestion, because Peter deserves a lot more credit for what he has done for ebooks than he usually gets. Will be fun to see what happens. There were so many cool ebook releases this year that it is hard to know where this will go.

To all, I like the idea of calling this The Duffie Award or "The Duffie" as Cameron suggested. Chris is spot on that Peter Duffie really deserves recognition for his pioneering efforts in this exciting medium. So folks, think about the e-books you want to vote for and here's hoping that this inagural year of The Duffie proves to be a resounding success! Namaste, Vlad |
