Hi All,
I am looking for recomendations as to what effects to buy first up, i.e. a good balance between not taking a lifetime of practice to perform and not too obvious or easy. I have read a bit about Svengali decks and they seem to represent value for money, in that there are numerous effects that can be performed with the one deck. Would like to get into card magic more than anything, but would consider anything that is a good close up effect, preferably representing value for money, i.e. has multiple uses, outs or effects that can be performed with one gimmick/purchase Also managed to get my hands on some gaffed bicycle cards (double backed, double faced, blank etc.), so can anyone recommend a good book including some effects that can be performed using them? |

Buy yourself a TT, a deck of regular cards and a good book or DVD on close up magic.

SilentG180,
If you'd PM me, I'd be glad to make some specific suggestions, but I have a few questions first. SEY |

There are many good books available, however I found Card College to be an excellent series. Three books, Carde College Light and Card College 1&2 will cost roughly $100 combined and will provide you with sufficient skills to perform at a high level with any deck of cards. An excellent invest, ent that you can take as far (or as little) as you like.

Find a used copy of "The Amateur Magician's Handbook", by Henry Hay. It's on Amazon, it'll cost you $3.50 (I just looked). It's important to read this from cover to cover before you start buying anything else.
For coin magic, get "Modern Coin Magic" by J.B.Bobo, this will cost less than a dollar (plus shipping). To get you started immediately with a knockout, simple effect, get "More self working card tricks" by Karl Fulves (again, less than a dollar) and learn "Gemini Twins". The books above will cost you less than $20 and you will be able to do some knockout stuff almost immediately. Great close up stuff outside of coins and cards (google and search on the Café) - Ring and string Crazy Man's Handcuffs Two in the hand, one in the pocket, and similar tricks with peanuts, small balls, or whatever. I hope that helps...! |

I second "The Amateur Magician's Handbook". A good book will provide a vast basis and you get a real chance to find your field of interest. Similiar titles which I would also recommend are Mark Wilson`s "Complete Course in Magic" and Harry Lorayne`s "Magic Book". But the most valuable advice I ever recieved was "just have fun"
All the best, Sven ^^

Svengali's are great because they are cheap, you can do a lot with them, and they look like normal cards that the spectators use while playing games or whatever.
Get a standard set of sponge balls for 5-10 dollars. Again, there are many routines and tricks that can be performed with sponge balls. Also, using sponge balls gives you practice with moves that can be used with other objects, i.e. false transfers, palming, using your thumb to manipulate objects, etc. If you get a TT, at least buy a silk or two with it. Also, get a Magic Coloring Book. Those things go a LONG way when it comes to performing for kids. Hope This Helped! P.S. By the way, everything I listed above was MY first magical purchase. It has served me well. |

Thanks guys
I should have really said that I already own a TT + 1 silk and a few decks of bikes plus gaffed cards and one or two other bits and pieces that a friend of mine passed on. Some great other suggestions here and I really like the sound of Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic, from the descriptions I have read it sounds like it covers an awful lot for the price and represents value for money so I think that it will become my next purchase |

Mark Wilson's book is great. You can find it used for a couple dollars. When I got back into magic I found a copy on half.com for almost nothing. The shipping cost more than the book.

I would invest in a few good books. You'll get more value for your money.

Here is a blog I wrote about it. I still feel tht this is a great list and would not change much on it. Also all books and dvd mentioned have a range of coins, card, rope and stuff. Some you pick up quick other will keep you busy for a while.

I recommend the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks. The cost is very small, but the payback is huge. It has tons of stuff with regular cards and gaffs including the Svengali. If you're looking for a killer card effect, try the Brainwave. It kills every time. They'll be talking about it for weeks afterward. I also like Color Monte, but I don't use the actual cards that come with the effect. I use a regular Joker, Queen of Hearts, and the Ace of Spades (for the climax). I usually do this one with borrowed cards (hence the Joker) and it also goes over very well.
Good luck! Cliff |

Buy a book like Tarbell's (If you can buy only two, buy number 1 and number 7).
Also, Mark Wilson's Complete course in magic has lots of good effects. There're this "Magic: Complete Course" by Joshua Jay. They say it's pretty good, buy I don't actually know if it is. |

Don't know if it "fits" here - no Svengalis, no gaffed cards at all, all impromptu, but just in case in can help: In another current thread, MuscleMagic wrote - "If you want dvd's then get the 4 dvd's by Harry Lorayne (Best Ever Collection Volume 1-4), one of the best card guys out there today Michael Vincent credits Harry non stop on his 3 dvd set and rightfully so.
The lorayne collection is a true case of teach a man to fish and you fed him for life, he shows you so many things that it allows your mind to run wild and create strong mind bogling effects by mixing things together and coming up with your own stuff. good luck in your learning."

There are some impressive tricks (with a good setup) with one way force decks that are easy.
And a LOT of variations out there for Invisible decks, but you have to work with them for a while to get smooth. |
