Hello Shawn,

I'd like to hear your views (and others' views) on America's Got Talent (or Canada's Got Talent, or Britain's Got Talent, or any other shows like this).

Do you think they hurt or help the magic community? If so, how?

In your opinion, are these shows full of crap, or can they actually help "discover" new talent and boost careers?

Having appeared on "Fool Us," would you ever consider appearing on AGT (or similar talent contest show)? I know you like contests!

And please, anyone else reading this, feel free to chime in. Although lots of magicians have appeared on AGT this season, many of them have been treated like crap by the judges. The 90 second format doesn't help matters, but it also seems the judges just want big, flashy illusions.

Mark,

AGT is horrible in my humble opinion. I can't stand to watch it. It makes magic look lame and is giving the world the wrong view of magic.
I am constantly upset when I see amazing acts, some of them friends, being shot down by the "judges" who's only qualifications to be a judge are that they were available!

OK, that said, I think it can be good for the acts if they know the Monster they are dealing with in the first place.
Look to acts like Nathan Burton, Kevin James and Murray Sawchuck who have done quite well "post AGT".

Heck the other day Eric Buss was insulted on national television, but he gets it and has already begun to spin the story to help his career.

The viewing audiences have a short memory and eventually will remember only what "sticks" in the press.

If you know what you are going into without any delusions it is an awesome opportunity for an act to gain recognition and elevate a career.
Most performers I fear will not be able to help but self delude themselves
It may not be the best thing for magic, but it can help an individual act to gain more press and eventually better paying gigs.

You are funny Payne. Remember... a sick mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Thanks, Shawn. I agree with most of what you've written here. However, you didn't answer my question of whether you'd appear on it. I think I already know the answer, but I want more replies so that I can win the contest.

How many others here have auditioned for AGT? What were your experiences like?

Mark,

Sorry I wasn't clear enough.
Under the current rules for AGT, yes I read the 40+ page document, I would NOT appear as a contestant on the show!
