THE PERFORMERS:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Darwin Ortiz has not previously appeared in this area. For most of you, this is a wonderful opportunity to see Darwin perform live and to have a chance to meet him. Darwin makes his living with a deck of cards. He has performed all over the world. Darwin has been a featured performer at magician's conventions in the U.S., England, Portugal, Argentina, and Japan and has lectured on sleight-of-hand before countless magician groups in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, England, and Scotland. Darwin is a sleight-of-hand artist, Magician, Entertainer, Media Personality, Casino Consultant, Author, and Gambler. Darwin Ortiz is truly unique: an artist, and expert, and an unforgettable entertainment experience. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Garrett Thomas is a close-up magician based out of Western New York who performs at public and private events across the United States. As a magician, Garrett is known for being an innovator as well as one of the top card, coin, and ring manipulators. His original effects, extreme technical skills, and keen understanding of human psychology culminate in highly visual, entertaining, and often enlightening routines. Garrett's commitment to the art of magic manifests not only in his performances, but also in his strong commitment to teaching the science and psychology of magic to other magicians. Garrett has produced several instructional books and videos on the subjects of coin, card, and ring manipulation, creating magical moments, and on the secret to becoming a "real" magician. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mark Zacharia is a close-up magician based out of the New Jersey area. Mark is a featured performer at many New York / New Jersey area restaurants. Mark is also known as being a magician's magician. The focus is on effects that play well in the restaurant and the material is geared toward the average guy. Marks lecture is sprinkled with tips and insights on performing magic which many say are as important as the material Mark delivers. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Kainoa Harbottle was born and raised in Honolulu, HI. Kainoa got his start in magic with a small comedy and magic group. By high school Kainoa was working along side some of O'ahu's top magicians. He worked at Curtis Kam's showroom in Waikiki as well as in restaurants and for private shows in both the business sector and the tourist industry. To everyone who attended the Motor City Convention in 2011......
If you enjoyed my lecture and performance last year, then you HAVE to check out Mark Zacharia this year. Mark has some of the most commercial routines that I have ever seen and he has been a huge influence on me and my magic. You will find easy to do magic that really plays for a lay audience. So if you went into last year not knowing who I was but pleasantly surprised by what you saw, then you will see that 10-fold when you see Mark David Corsaro
My new DVD ("The magic of David Corsaro") is now available from your favorite dealer. Watch the DVD that Daryl, Jon Allen, Shawn Farquhar, Boris Wild, Marc DeSouza, Asi Wind and Paul Green ALL ENDORSE.

THE WORKSHOPS:
Darwin Ortiz Sleight-of-Hand Workshop The subject of the workshop will be intermediate sleight of hand. The focus will be entirely on addressing the needs and interests of those attending. Toward that end, Darwin will begin the workshop by asking attendees what sleights and subjects they would most like covered. As much as time allows, he will attempt to cover each of the subjects request. Some possible topics, as time permits: • palming (palming one card, palming several cards; palming from the top, palming from the bottom; gambler’s cop; palm replacements.) • the pinky count • false dealing • shuffle work • Darwin also plans to teach one or two previously unpublished effects of his. Additionally, one of Darwin’s goals will be to ensure that each person gets individual attention. Which--and how many moves and subjects will be covered--depends on the interests of the attendees. But the important point is that those attending will determine what Darwin ends up spending time on. And, hopefully, each person will feel that his personal concerns were addressed. Darwin’s workshop takes place on Sunday morning from 10:00 AM until Noon. The cost of the workshop is $40. Garrett Thomas Workshop Garrett will cover fundamental coin magic in his workshop. Garrett goes into a lot of detail regarding his coin work. Why he does what he does when he does. Any questions that you have will be answered. You will also learn an excellent coins across routine that you can add to your repertoire. Garrett’s workshop takes place on Saturday afternoon from 12:45 PM until 2:45 PM. The cost of the workshop is $30. Kainoa Harbottle Cointensive Workshop For those interested in a more intensive learning environment, Kainoa is providing a workshop limited to 10 participants. Whether new to coin magic or a pro, participants get to decide how the workshop is organized, by focusing on the sleights you are interested in learning or perfecting. Along with this, you will receive a smattering of theory about what makes coin magic memorable. Bring an effect or routine you are interested in working on or performing for the group. Kainoa’s workshop takes place on Friday evening from 10:00 PM until Mid-night. The cost of the workshop is $25. |

Hello, Café-ers!
I hope you will come join us at the Motor City Convention next week. I have some new, commercial material I know you are going to love. Doc Eason himself praises my "Anniversary Lambada," my in-the-hands version of "Anniverary Waltz"; Alexander de Cova loves my "5-Card Monte," a NO-GAFF version of Wildcard; and Marc DeSouza was quick to point out the commercial value of my "Crash & Burn," which combines all the whimsy of a story deck with the spectator involvement of a pick-a-card effect. I will also be performing "The Voodoo that You Do" and my new kid-favorite, "Night at the Museum." Please make a point of stopping by to say hello. Thank you.

This has been an incredible convention so far! The room is filled with enthusiastic attendees. John Luka has gone to great lengths to accommodate his attendees, including providing a rake steep enough to allow the audience members to be able to see over the heads of the people in front of them. I'm told this is the largest dealer turn-out for this convention to date. During last night's opening-night performances, Kainoa Harbottle owned the room with his charming personality and other-worldly coin work; Darwin Ortiz delivered vintage Ortizian card work; Garrett Thomas fried everyone with his penetrating ring and stand-up Monte effects. This really is magic the way it is supposed to be seen.

Many attendees commented that this may have been my best convention ever.
Each performer exceeded my expectations. How lucky can I get!!! I was also very fortunate to have a few surprise performances from people like Doug Conn, Kozmo, Fred Lenter, Tom Mosier, and Marv Long. They sure added to the enjoyment. Then you got to see a lot of magic done for laymen in the lobby. Tony Cabral actually had a lady scream at the finale of one of his effects. I would like to publicly thank the hired guns: Darwin Ortiz, Garret Thomas, Kainoa Harbottle, and Mark Zacharia. Gentlemen, I would not hesitate in the least to have you back. Thank you for a job well done! John Luka |
