Your IQ must be higher than mine because I don't have a clue what that means. |

I took the test but can't remember what my score was unless I go look it up. So I guess it hasn't made a bit of difference in my life.

I joined Mensa in my early 20s because I was always curious about my IQ. In high-school and college, I always got lousy grades and graduated high-school with a 2.0 average. Counselors always told me I could do better, etc.. They always said I "had what it takes" but they never put me in the gifted program for whatever reasons. I do absolutley nothing with Mensa now that I belong. The Local Group here in San Diego is dull, and I never attend the meetings or get-togethers. The one that I did attend years ago was terrible. The guy sponsoring the party at his house had body odor. Some of the other guests were just plain...weird...and a bit arrogant. I just enjoy knowing (finally) what my IQ is. I am no better than anybody else -- I still can't balance a checkbook, I hate math, etc.. I think a lot of my fellow Mensa members let their high IQ score go to their heads and it becomes a big part of their ego and self-identity. In fact, I'd bet money that many of them have a Mensa membership certificate framed and hanging on their wall in a conspicuous place. Blah.....

According to At The Card Table, Darwin Ortiz is (was?) a member of Mensa.
Perhaps the meetings in Washington, DC are more interesting than those in San Diego. |

2 things that caused me problems in school. My high IQ and my recall.
This made my father to have to listen to the "if he would only apply himself" speech every quarter. They never felt I lived up to my potential. Mind you I still not only passed but got great grades. I just never spent much time at it. They always expected more, and were quite disapointed.

OMG. Do I identify with that. I was a terrible student, although I did go to a private school. I got the "not living up to his potential" speech as well, and after I learned my IQ I understood why they were concerned. A few years ago my mother died and she kept every record of my schooling from nursery school through college and to read the reports and the horrible grades. It was amazing. I think I was just bored. |

1. Yes I know it.
2. You wouldn't believe me if I told you what it is. 3. Knowing it hasn't made a bit of difference to me. School grades have much more impact on my life than this number does.

I really don't, but I figure it's a good idea to bid as if I do.

Yes.It surprised me, because I didn't relate 'not living up to potential' to IQ....I related it to calling me lazy, and I believed it because I never had to work hard in school. Knowing also justified why I was different enough to read 4-6 books a week, absorb every bit of magic info there was, and, in general, it was the excuse for my being weird. Think Sheldon with a Thumb Tip. I was into everything until I learned the basics, then would discard it as not being of sufficient interst to pursue. Knowing was my internal permission to fly.
It didn't make me smarter, tho.

Where would one go to find out this sort of information? I believe I was tested in 8th grade, and I was told a number, but how in the world would anybody fact check me? I could say 80, or I could say 160 and your choice would to believe me or not. Why would anyone want to know the results of this silly test?

People who missed class in college would ask for my notes. I did not take them. Except the classes that your notebook was part of the grade. I went to private school as well. I had a couple of teachers who knew how to deal with me.
