Hey guys,
I'm curious how far you can go having only the four aces (or maybe any other four of a kind). No deck, just four cards - what effects, apart from the immortal Dr. Daley's Last Trick you can do? Best, Mike |

Twisting the Aces comes to mind as does Overture (found in Focus by Max Maven) Hippity Hop Aces from Chick Schoke in Tarbell 5.
I am sure there will be more. Namaste, Vlad |

Vlad,
could you please describe the Hippity Hop Aces effect? Thanks mlippo |

Check out Phil Goldsteins Focus. It has a lot of packet style effect.
We can address the questions by brainstorming I think versus just naming sources or tricks. Now do they have to be ungimmicked? There is the wonderful gimmicked cards, where the backs actually make a jumbo card. I know Woody Aragon released something with for pieces of a jumbo card. You also have many three card monte possibilites. (David Stone has a nice one.) The big question is why restrict yourself so much? |

Tenchu:
I'm curious...... How do you intend to "get into it".....IE: Do you plan on producing the aces from a deck, then putting the deck aside or just coming out cold with just the 4 aces, and then proceeding to do a trick with them? From my standpoint, routining would be best served by magically producing the aces from the deck........like....Vernon's "Cutting The Aces" from Stars of Magic, or Earl Nelson's "Sleeve Aces" from Variations. And sure, there are more four ace productions out there too. I just think it's prettier to see a routine that produces the aces first, then do a trick or two, like Twisting The Aces, once they're produced. |

I'm just asking about effects that you can do with only four cards.

Dr. Daley's Last Trick
Twisting The Aces Overture I've been doing these as a set for many years Sometimes I'll do Carney's Sanverted instead of Dr. Daley's Last Trick Also there's Japanese Aces - an oil and water routine that uses 4 aces plus an extra card the audience isn't aware of :) Sohaib |

Ambitious Rendezvous uses four aces with no gaffs or additional cards. It's a blend of ambitious card and wild card. It's one of my favorites. It can be found in Ch. 5 in The Book of Destiny. It is also performed and taught on the Companion DVD that comes with the book.

Found another one: Peek-A-Boo Aces from The Card Magic of Nick Trost (page 79).

The same principle used in Nick Trost's "Peek-A-Boo Aces" is used in Tetsuyoshi Hoshino's "Not By Sight" from Apocalypse (March, 1987, page 1329). The four aces are also used (and a card box).

If you don't mind starting with 8 cards, you can really increase the effects to come up with a full act with just 8 carefully chosen cards.
Start with 8 card brainwave Palm choice to wallet - 7 remain Next, perform Jumping Gemini - 4 remain Then do... Daley's Last Trick Twisting the Aces Lose an ace and do a 3 card monte - 3 remain Do Garcia's Torn - 2 remain Then Card Warp - 0 remain Finish with Blackstone's trick without a deck just a thought... Jim, I like your thinking! Good routining. I use a similar approach with court cards. But haven't done an all Ace segment in this manner.
