Sal Piacente's Expert Card Magic dvds have a fantastic trick in them. I think it's called Sal's Opener. This trick is outstanding, a true miracle. It fooled me so badly when I first saw it.

Harry,
The effect is that the magician gives the spectator the deck and asks him to give it a riffle shuffle. Spectator deals about a quarter of the deck and the magician glances at them and attempts to memorize them in less than a couple of seconds. Spectator takes them back and removes a card that only he can see. The magician is then able to name that card by looking at the remaining cards in that packet. He attempts to do it again with another 1/4 of the deck but this time it is a black jack hand and the magician is still successful. For a finale, the spectator takes the other half of the deck and removes a poker hand. The magician doesn't need to study and memorize the cards this time because he has already memorized the first half of the deck. He picks up the remaining cards and is able to name the poker hand the spectator chose!! --- For anyone else interested, it's a wonderful effect and it is found in volume 1 of Sal's Expert Card Magic Lecture Notes DVD and I would definitely recommend picking it up. There are 'only' five effects but they are all excellent. One of my favorite magic DVDs that I own. |

We think many times very different, I love to start with a principle example Gilbreath and see what you can do with it. Because I know only a few tricks utilizing the principle and where the spectator can riffle shuffle etc and that made me hungry for more, nothing strange about that, but I understand your way of thinking but I'm a little different, that's it. Take care //DC |

Hey Daniel, I agree with you,
also you are right, I have a different perspective on learning magic, basically I feel it is healthier not to learn ¨what is the strongest effect I can do with a specific method¨, but rather: ¨what is the strongest effect I can do¨. just wanted to share my opinion, Good luck to you. |

Woody Aragon, by the way, was noticed by Steve Beam and one of Woody's Gilbreath tricks (Psychic Poker) appears in Volume 8 of "Semi-Automatic Card Tricks." By the way - in case it has not been mentioned, Karl Fulves is a Gilbreath Ninja!

My name is Joe Mckay - but on a whim (about 8 years ago) - I used Bob Hummer's name when signing up here, since I am a big fan of his work.
Anyway - for what it is worth - I am sure that Bob Hummer has no tricks using this principle. Now - one of my favourite uses for the Gilbreath Principle is GAME LAW by Roy Walton. It is unusual since it allows the spectator to give the deck TWO riffle shuffles. EMIT by Peter Duffie is probably the most off-beat use for this principle I have seen. Hopefully he will reprint it in one of his books at some point. Joe |

Also - here is an interesting twist to 'The Gilbreath Principle' - http://www.maa.org/columns/colm/cardcolm200908.html
It incorporates some developments by the brilliant Leo Boudreau. Joe |

I believe you can do no better than "Up The Ante". When I do that, there is literally nothing else I can do afterwards. It is always the last thing I do in an evening with a group and it's how I get my re-bookings. I've even done it by posting the cards to someone and using skype.
