Gazzo believes the Tossed Out Deck is the greatest. I love performing it also. Of course the greatest is subjective. If someone kills with the 21 card trick, that may be it for them ( I learned that in 1964 and I may have agreed back then ).
I guess it can also be one that some of us ( me ) aren't skilled enough to perform. |

The card to box (first part of video) The above link is from Ricky Jay and his 52 assistance show, obviously the term greatest depends on who you ask, magician, lay person and also how much have they seem to deem what the greatest. So I am strickly mentioning the above link as I think for lay people its the best responce I have seen. Its a 5 minute routine that is funny and its with a real good ending, even today the card to sealed box gets an amazing responce, recenly when shawn farquhar did he card to box on pen and teller for us, granted there was lots more to his trick then card to box, still it got a really unseen response from someone like penn & teller. I think its important today to understand that more and more people want quick and powerful effects, peoples attention spans have dropped significally (real studies showed this read up on this if you are a performer). The above trick mentioned by Tamariz is a great trick, its a 10 minute routine, try doing that for a crowd of people age 18-35 and even if you are real good with your words etc, they will be very annoyed, and yes its a great trick, its a great fooler and all but its simply too long (not for magicians but for lay people). |

Isn't the Tamariz routine called "Total Coincidence", not "Triple Coincidence"? If it's the Total Coincidence I think it is, it requires two spectators to shuffle cards and separate reds from blacks - this makes it too laborious to be the best effect. Now Tamariz is undeniably a genius, and he makes it entertaining - but it takes a genius to make two volunteers sorting red cards from black entertaining. I mean, that's practically a job. People in post offices are paid to do stuff like that.
Also worth pointing out, is that Gazzo sells a Tossed Out Deck DVD. It's a fun trick, but the best of all time? The six card trick is up there, for sure. The invisible deck is a contender (but it's been cheapened by being so overdone). Ambitious card is entertaining and has the connection with "The Trick That Fooled Houdini". Three Card Monte is a great trick too. A good "do as I do" is great (e.g. Pat Page's stage version). The rising card, haunted deck and variations are overrated. The six card trick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAWi15MAOmo Wayne is so good he only needs five cards... With card tricks, the amount of tedious procedure you put your audience through and the amount they have to think needs to be compensated by effect or entertainment. If they have to remember more than one thing, it's a bad trick. If they have to remember anything at all, it's questionable. If they have to sort through the cards, deal or do math of any kind, it'd better be a d*mn miracle. For me, I think "The Trick That Cannot Be Explained" is the world's greatest card trick. But the trick doesn't really matter (continuing with the Wayne Dobson clips...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1xkMoPGXN0 : Spelling trick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxqBOP9J8bo : Pick a card. Most magicians do those two tricks badly. By contrast, Wayne Dobson could do (almost) any trick and it would be a knockout. Now, the greatest performance of a card trick... that's a whole other question... |

In general, people's attention spans have not dropped in regards to all things. They just have a much lower threshold for mediocrity. They sit through two hour movies, right? They sit through a one hour Rock Concert, right? They watch a one hour show on television, right? So I think a good performer could keep their attention for a five minute trick... SEY |

Is this for real or am I seeing things? You're citing one article from a crappy pseudo-study about SOCIAL MEDIA in order to justify your assessment that "attention spans have dropped" across the board....
I think you're belittling the intellect your audience, Zac

Do you really expect a study that just looks into peoples attention spans when it comes to magic? hahahah read up, be open minded, http://www.guardian.co.uk/media-network/......consumer |

Still prefer books, still refuse to accept that the people I entertain can't sit through a 5 minute magic trick... young or old. Plus, you may as well be citing Wikipedia in your claim to knowledge.

The attention span dropping may or may not be true, I don't know. However, I do know that a good performer can hold the audience's attention for more than 30 seconds.
