I once was attached by a guy with a baseball bat, if he had a gun I may not be here today. It's easier to out run a bat than it is a bullet.

I am not an anti guns advocate. I just go about my business without any childish fears. I have been doing birthday parties in inner city neighborhoods for over 30 years without any incidents, and I have no idea what you clowns are afraid of. I also smile and say "no thank you" to the crack dealers, who don't really pay any attention to me. Of course if you watch a lot of cops and robbers on TV you'd think that everybody was out to get you. BTW That Alabama reference was a quote I heard on TV.

Al makes a good point. I use to put myself into situations where there was a lot of violence and crime around me and I was involved with fights and where shootings were. Since I quit going to those places I realize that while you don't know what can happen I don't have any fear of a situation taking place where I would need a gun.
The reality is IF you are in that situation it is 100% certain you need a weapon, if not you don't need one. You just roll with it, don't let it bother you, and if it happens hope my pal Ron is there. |

If you are in a place that you need a gun get out of that place, and use your head next time.
The crack dealers saw me as a harmless old white man, and if I was strutting down the street packing heat someone (most likely me) is going to get hurt.

I had one guy try to sell me crack and I said "Do I really look like I do crack?" and he said 'no' and laughed and went on his way. I wouldn't know what crack was if I saw it.

And there are a couple of towns that I stay out of because I'm a big old chicken. When I carry it's when I'm walking in the woods (lots of wild dogs around here) or have to travel through long stretches of unpopulated areas in the late or wee hours, in case of a car breakdown or something. I do support the right (and responsibilities) to carry, but I ain't one of them gun nuts. Just nuts in general. |

You have asked the 64 dollar question. If I were anti gun advocate I would be tell you what I think you should do, but to be perfectly honest with you Scarlett I don't really give a darn if you walk around the streets of LA with a bazooka on your shoulder. Of course that being said if you were to walk around LA with a bazooka on your shoulder it would absolutely crack me up.

How would anyone know...I find it hard to say but I will quote you, that you are packing heat? OMG You are one strange guy Al. Do you do a lot of strutting? If you were "packing heat" would you strut more? lol You not only watch to much TV but you watch to many old movies on TV.

Of course it is not your aunt and uncle is it?

Dumb question time! No, it is not if CCW should be gender based.
1. For those that have a gun to carry or do carry one how big is it? Do you carry a shorter weapon or revolver? Don't assume I know anything about guns because I don't so generalities will go over my head. 2. How do you carry it? In a shoulder holster or in a pocket? On your belt under a shirt or jacket? I'm really interested because the closest I've seen to a concealed weapon turned out to be a plains clothes cop under this jacket in a shoulder holster. I asked him and he's never had to pull it other than in cases where they were suppose to have it out when making an approach on some house or something. |

Tony,
There are way to many variables involved to answer your question and IMO a magic fourm is NOT the place to ask it! My suggestion would be to check the yellow pages for a well established gun shop and shooting range that offers professional instruction in all areas related. The good news for you is that Fresno has a few top notch shops/ranges! Do your research, get proper instruction and find out what suits YOU best! FWIW, there are no dumb questions just a LOT of dumb, usually ill informed answers! The past few pages of this topic should tell ya that! MMc |

Whether one is for or against carrying a weapon, let's at least clear up one thing? (And OH yes I KNOW I will be flamed for this one. So be it). I am sick of the trope that "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." What utter BS. The trope is based upon the accurate observation that guns are non-sentient and thus incapable of thought or independent action. But, what the defenders of this tired argument fail to acknowledge is that guns, unlike cars, knives, baseball bats, and drain opener (!) are designed for ONE purpose only: to maim or kill.
I do not carry a gun. In The Netherland it's forbidden. But I grew up in America where the right to bear arms is constitutionally guaranteed. I have lived in dangerous parts of cities and performed in dangerous parts of cities and I never felt the need for a gun. You see, my reasoning is this - and I share this only in a very limited fashion - I am a survivor of 18 years of horrific abuse. What was done to me in the first 18 years of my life, most people would never experience even a fraction of it. In addition, I grew up around a culture of violence. My so-called father was a Mafia enforcer who is serving two consecutive life sentences PLUS sixty two years for his laundry list of crimes. I have seen personally what violence does and it ain't pretty folks. But the real core of my reasoning is this: for all that happened to me: merciless beatings, broken hands, etc., the very WORST that can happen to me is that I get killed. I have seen and been the victim of some very dark things. People have pulled knives on me, threatened me with broken beer bottles, and a whole host of other things. I tell these people to go for it, but, they had better make a good job of it. I press it, and yes I realize that I am rolling the dice each time, but, in each and every case, the person has backed down. I do not fear death at the hands of another because a large part of my life was spent skirting the edge of that abyss. I will not allow myself to descend to the depths of that void. That is my choice just as carrying a weapon for some of you is your choice. I respect it and would hope you respect my reasoning. Namaste, Vlad |
