It's time to let the cat out of the bag.
https://twitter.com/DavenportsMagic/stat....../1/large - To avoid any confusion, this will be a physical printing, not an e-book. |

Nice! I have this but need Volume 2. I'm guessing Volume 2 will follow?

Vol 2 will hopefully be early next year. Can't say when exactly.

I bought the originals last year and these are a treasure. I am so happy they are being reprinted. Roy Walton is one of the most influential card magicians our art has produced. Now, I hope there will be a volume 3!
If I may be so bold, I would assert that if one is serious about card magic, Walton is essential reading - but then I am preaching to the choir methinks Namaste, Vlad PS: Next year, if I am not heading up the Book of the Year contest, THIS will get my vote |

I managed to find Vol.1 second edition last year and must say that it has some of the hardest hitting magic I've ever seen. Besides that, it has fantastic effects that use the half pass and pass. If you are serious about magic you need to get these books. Also, if you are interested in false deals, Walton's full grip bottom deal and second deal are fantastically described. I can't wait for volume 2 to be reprinted, so hard to find!

I remember working into an old brick and mortar magic shop by accident while on a business trip in Glasgow Scotland. Had a very brief chat with the older gentleman at the counter that I presumed was the owner. Shop was very unassuming, had your standard glass case displays with your classic/popular packets tricks ( think Mike Skinner's 3 Card Monte, Colour Monte etc). I walked out and didn't buy anything. Months later at a convention in London I was told by a fellow magician that the person in the store was Roy Walton. I'm kicking myself for not doing my research beforehand and not getting to ask one of the great minds of magic about some of his wonderful magic!!! We have a wonderful opportunity in our art that we get to meet and talk to pioneers/genius'/idols.

This is fantastic news. The Walton material is some of the finest in all of card magic. The shop run by Roy and his family is Tam Shepherd's.

Sweet; I suspect sales will be huge if the number of people ongoing for both volumes and willing to pay a lot is any indication. I'd be curious to know why a clear classic like this would lapse into being out of print when there is a clear demand for an ample printing of it.

I bought volume 1 from Roy Walton at Tam Shepherd's a few years back, and he signed it for me. So I went back a couple of years later with my son and bought volume 2, and he very kindly let my son (who was 12 at the time) perform the only card trick he knows for him, and then signed the book to both of us. My son isn't interested in magic, but he's well aware of the respect due to Roy Walton in magic circles, and it was a great moment for us both. The books are very good, and deserve to sell well.

I wonder how this will effect the value of the originals; I don't own them, but would sure as hell like to.

Still threat'ning to devour me opens wide, To which the Hell I suffer seems a Heav'n" -John Milton, (Paradise Lost) |

I suspect that distinctive, strong-selling subsequent editions increase the value of first editions.

Previous editions will probably decrease in value when the new printing is released.

Bought mine about 15years ago in Davenports (both volumes) for about £12/£15 each, can't quite remember.
It was Jerry Sadowitz who put me on to them. |

"Previous editions will probably decrease in value when the new printing is released"
With books like this, value tends to be by edition, and not be determined by aggregate supply The number of first edition copies is fixed. To the extent that subsequent editions increase interest and demand, including for first editions, that has a net increase effect on first-edition price. They aren't substitute goods. Someone who collects first editions won't abandon the quest for a first edition just because he can acquire a Dover paperback of the same text. For instance, subsequent editions of Erdnase - now in the public domain - have likely helped keep the book relevant and elevated rather than depleted the demand for first editions. However, the value of the 1999 edition of Walton might decrease, with this new edition sharpening the true first edition's distinctiveness. |
