I guess I take the risk of reporting on something a little bit too early- but that's ok- I can follow up on it in a week or so. I have some uncharted free time in my job (usually sitting in a courtroom waiting room for 10+ hours a week)- so it does allow time for me to usually read several hundred pages weekly with not much else to do. Court hearings are usually scheduled in multiple numbers-10 or more an hour, so one's 1PM hearing can finally "called" at 2:30PM and still be considered "on time."
Anyway, I picked up a few days ago Charles R. Swindoll's 2012 268 page hardcover book "Saying It Well- Touching Others With Your Words." My guess is many bookstores would have it in stock. I am already at page 101, so far it has been an autobiography of the ministries Pastor Chuck has been with. Since I have always been a big Swindoll "fan"- that was interesting reading for me. The remaining sections of the book going into next may have some relevance for what we as Gospel magicians do- basically on how to prepare an effective message. Although the author focuses on mainly on how to prepare a sermon, he does broaden it out to apply to other areas of public speaking as well that I have found helpful so far. It does not take much of a stretch to insert in your mind "Gospel magician" for the words "speaker" or "presenter" or "preacher" when they are used. I think if I personally put the time and effort into preparing my programs that Chuck even puts into one of his sermon, I will be much more effective in reaching/entertaining my audiences. You may want to check this book out like I am currently, is easy to read particularly if you enjoy listening to Insight for Living on the radio or web. |

So far (I am about half way through the book now), it is basically about sermon preparation, just to let you know again.

I am now on page 201, an excellent read. I think it should really be a must for seminary students on how to prepare a sermon. I love the Yogi Berra quote in the chapter "Laughing" (e.g. having humor in the sermons)- "You should always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours." Classic.

I am now reading the excellent "Vertical Church" by James MacDonald, David C. Cook Publishers, 2012. Chapter 7 on doing evangelism for "red apples" vs. the "green apples" really gave me something to think about- especially in how the Gospel is to be presented. http://www.cbd.com or http://www.davidccook.com or "google" James MacDonald Vertical Church to link to his Walk in the Word web site.
