A few years ago, I bought the SFS Fast & Loose notes but I couldn't afford the chain. I tried other chains but wasn't too satisfied.
Since I was doing close-up at renaissance faires, it occurred to me to try the traditional version described at the beginning of the SFS book. This version uses a belt that is doubled over and wound in a spiral. Pretty good but a bit clumsy. To get around this, I made a replica barrel head out of a lazy susan. To make rewinding the belt less cumbersome, I drilled two holes in the center, in which I loosely insert two "belaying pins" (actually a bodhran beater cut in half). I am not seeming to be able to upload my picture. PM me for it if you want. I explain a bit about the history of the game and tell the player that I will pull away the strap. They are to remove one pin, attempting to hold me fast by leaving the one in the middle. For instructions, see The School for Scoundrels Notes on Fast and Loose. http://www.chefanton.com/scoundrelsstore/fast_and_loose.htm |

I like it! I may have to revisit this idea.
What I did was buy a length of chain from JoAnn Fabrics. It is 100" and I used a pair of pliers to open one link at the end and turn it into an endless chain. Works fine, cost me about $3. I used one of their coupons from the paper. I'm liking the look of the leather belt, though. That's a great way to do it. Also, that's a good use for one of those big clunky tippers. My dad plays and has decided on a simple rod or a slightly tapered one. He ended up buying a lathe so he could make himself a tipper he liked. He could have gotten every tipper made for less money than the lathe, but there's something special about making it yourself. -Patrick |

Patrick, I guess I'm not familiar with tippers.

Another name for bodhran beaters. There's one guy who calls his Goat Whackers because the drum heads are usually goatskin...
