When performing on the streets, I too resemble Gazzo. Why? because I really like his style, and I watched a lot of videos on youtube from many street performers, but for me Gazzo is the best.
I think it's normal to imitate someone you admire, and then work out your own style. I remember doing the Hobson eggbag with the sparkling hobson attitude, now I do the same routine but with my character doing it, not my character imitating hobson. In fact, the Gazzo "agressive" style really got into my street character. I think the agressive style has something kind of "commanding" stuff into. Like you're the boss, no one messes with you and you are the best even if you know you aren't. It's a Whiteface clown/buffoon prototype. |

I love james as a person and his work at the cups.
he is, I think the ONLY one doing a show similar to gazzos that I like. fact is I have seen his show live many many times and it is a great show. he is humble and maybe the only one doing the cups this way who actually even knows gazzo in person. anyway I have to agree that I do see see james as doing much of his own work in the show. he is a loyal friend and a great worker to que up with. and as usuall stperformer has made a huge point, where are these people taking pot shots on youtube? where is their work to be critiqued, or if they are using anonimous names here why are they afraid of showing their work. someone called me a sonny clone (even tho I am his only student with personal PERMISSION which nulls me from being a clone) yet I see nothing of pot shot callers work and he claims ten years working the street doing gazzos show. this forum is a great place for amatuers to pretend to be pro and make claims they wouldn't dare make on a pitch. because on a pitch everyone can see. the simple fact is james is a full time pro, has been for many years. he is talented and knows more about busking and magic then someone who apes a gazzo video. he has contributed to the art of magic with his news site and many other ways. he is not in it for himself and shows respect for those who came before him. in my thread about magic shows and cups that I posted, if you read his post it is humble and shows respect for gazzo and any other street performer doing it for awhile, but if you read any of the other guys who may have disagreed with this idea, all you could hear was animosity and ego. the big thing about copying of course is respect for the originator, this is why I have PERMISSION from sonny to do the one or two tricks that he wants me to do. I was always under the impression that james had this same permission from the lectures he attended. frankly I think james has paid his dues on the street and is great at what he does. thanks james for everything you've done for us in your career at magic. |

James, about half a year back you gave away your pouch and cups and balls as part of a promotion. What's happening nowadays about you working on the streets? And how is your present internet work going, if you care to share.
The presentation makes the magic.

Hi Jimmy, thanks for your kind words, friendship and love. I met one of your student, Michael, in Edinburgh, who was doing really great stuff. A total gent. with a great take on what works on the streets. Totally different style and show, intelligent and entertaining.
MagicCol, yes the competition last year went really well. The whole rig, ( cups balls pouch bag costume table and even the trolley) went to the winner from the UK, the coins to a young lad in Scotland, and Mark Madins 'Come Fly with Me' ( his take on Chris Kenners' Three Fly'...) a £200 effect. I flew over to London specifically to hand them over. As well as interview Charlie Caper for MagicNews TeleVision. MagicNews has taken a back seat over the past year, due to work, travel, and life in general. I have video of the hand over and it will be shown in the new/improved site when it relaunches January 2013. I respect Steve Brooks and the Café, so am not promoting it on threads, but may take out advertising during the launch. Thanks to everyone here for their respect and understanding. I'm in Malaysia just now, and as I type this on my iPhone, I'm sitting at a table ( in Genting Highlands), just about to do a show, so I'd better go. My profile may say I'm online, as I'm constantly logged in through my phone, but mostly doing shows, having dinner, asleep, and having a beer.... |
