Birch TUC
These writings are intoduction to the possibilites of combining the popular T.U.C. coin gimmick and the a presentation concept called the “Birch Stack” (B-Stack). Though I published an eBook based on the concept in 2009 called Shook containing several effects and details of Sleights, Moves and Subtleties involved, this gained little attention since it employs a Hooked Coin in combination with an EXP Shell and normal coin. These possibilites are base on another eBook titled Hooker that explores the possibilites of the Hooked Coin beyond common knowledge and even the Spooner publication Here’s Hoo with Coins. Don’t run away in fear! Although the features of the “hook” allows for many unique effects, the use of a shimmed coin and concealed magnet, or a magnetic coin, can serve as substitute in a majority of the described Effects. The other part of the B-Stack is an Exp Shell and normal coin, or a shaved coin and matching shell. TKhe combination allows the performer to be “one ahead” or “one behind” at will – though reading of the complete manuscript may be required to fully appreciate the possibilites. The special features of the TUC allows it to serve as either the “hooked coin” because of its magnetic propery, or as the “shell-coin” combo in conjunction with another magnetic coin or hooked coin. Of course, an additional EXP Shell can also be employed to expand the possibilites even further! Naturally, the TUC can be used in other effects as part of a complex routine not dependant on the B-Stack. In order to whet your appitite, here are some extracts from Shook. "In 1958 I received a phone call from the widow of a man I had never met, but who had observed me performing some magic in a park – just live practice in front of some appreciative old folks. She gave me a box of his “junk” collected over the years and now moldering in the attic. Very little was useable, unfortunately. One item was a home-made ‘Foo Can’ constructed from a large juice can with a soldered insert. It was bent and the paper label was peeling off, but I kept it as a memento filled with yarn and a rusty ‘Squared Circle.” In 2008 I came across it in a move and almost tossed it away before discovering a folded bunch of paper in the bottom. These were crudely typewritten pages of notes headed by the name Nelson Birch, the date 1934 and a faded line that seems to say “Mystic Wand Society, New Brunswick, New Jersey.” Most of the pages are illegible. I was able to make out some descriptions of some coin effects, mostly attempts to simplify the Miser’s Dream from a stage routine to a parlor presentation using household objects. One idea was combining a Shell Coin and a Hooked Coin in some novel ways to replicate more difficult sleights like back-front palming. It started me thinking and playing around. I had already written Hooker as a Booklet on additional uses for the Hooked Coin, and used a Shell occasionally in my Medieval Routines. I often performed CoinAge Miser’s Dream and many Effects using a coffee mug. So, I was supposed to find those notes now instead of then … I have developed a number of MOVES, SLEIGHTS and SUBTLETIES using these gaffed Coins in combination based on these notes, with some suggested Routines for their use. I have also included ideas on using an Expanded Shell and many ideas from HOOKER. I am sure you will find something in these pages to add to your repertoire of Close-up Magic. What I really hope is that someday you will see a kid in a park practicing magic and pass on something of your love for the art – and maybe an old trick or two." And a sample effect … "After dinner you wipe out your Coffee Cup and clear a space for the Saucer as you rise. The Cup is displayed on all sides and is cradled in the left palm. A coin suddenly appears in your right finger-tips and is tossed into the Cup. Another appears plucked from thin air and joins the first. Your hands are empty. Both coins are poured out into the hand for all to see – two coins and a simple Cup. These are replace – one, two; and another coin produced. Again one is snatched from the air and joins the others. Then the Five coins are poured into the empty right hand. Four of these are placed on the Saucer. One is returned to the Cup to “show the way.” The hand is empty. Flash! – a coin is produced and dropped into the Cup. More and more coins are produced from either hand always displayed empty in between impossible productions. Occasionally coins are poured out of the Cup and added to those on the Saucer. It overflows onto the table. You finally ask if you can have some more coffee. That’s you doing it! No complicated Sleights or gimmicked Cup. The Miser’s Dream close up and personal – anywhere, any time. You probably already know most of the Moves and Sleights required – just have never realized the potential of combining them in innovative ways. Neither did I …" …………………………………………………………. While the eBook Shook is for sale on eversway.com – I am willing to share this book and open a dialogue with a select number of avid TUC users to explore the possibilities of using the TUC in this manner. Please send any thoughts of interest, intent and TUC experience to gusarimagic@comcast.net Your participation may lead to a later publication in which you can receive acknowledgement if desired.
