The effects on this DVD seem very interesting and I'm close to buying this. I'm wondering if anyone owns this, is it worth it? Are the effects what they claim to be?
Pros? Cons? I'm grateful for any info provided! Thanx a bunch guys, Take care, Logan http://www.murphysmagicsupplies.com/cata......eet.html (Check it out here)

I think the DVD sounds pretty good, some good visual stuff. If the quality of effects is anything like the first Magics Rising Stars video with Garret Thomas, then I am sure this video is worth checking out.
Check out my new effect "As Good As It Gets" a gimmickles pencil or pen through bill effect. It closely mimmicks the slow motion phase of "Misled." About "As Good AS It Gets" for no gimmicks and everything being borrowed.

After watching this DVD I would rate it about a 3/10...
Here is my opinion of the effects. Ashes - His favorite magician fooler, Chris FINALLY tips his work on the ultimate visual ace assembly! CARDS INCLUDED! This is Chris' handling of McDonald's Aces. The routine, while visual, I feel has a big problem. He uses the same vanish (Asher Twist) on every packet. At least for me, this doesn't make it a "magician fooler". I also don't get why they say he "FINALLY tips his work". I have seen magi use this sleight for vanishes in Ace Assemblies for a few years now. Sugar High - The powder in a sealed packet of sweetener magically changes according to a spectator's wishes! Again, the description is a little different then the effect. It starts by Chris having a spec hold 4 or 5 packets of sugar. A color is called out and Chris retrieves the packets from their hand. He then drops all of them but one which is opened and shown to have changed to that color. This would have been better if he had handed them only ONE packet or better yet have them choose one. But by placing a group of packets in their hand from the start really diminshes the effect. Silverose - A flower, fire, and a romantic mood combine to make the most visual coin production you have ever seen! This a mix of Chad Long's Flash Coins and Hoosier's Extroydinary... Not really bad but then again nothing really new. Pip Squeek - The center pip vanishes from an ace, leaving a real hole - then instantly and visibly is restored! Basically what you read is what you get... Frankenfish - One of the wildest effects ever! Bring a dead fish back to life right in front of their eyes! This is one of the highlights of the DVD. A dead fish is produced in a glass of water and then brought back to life. If you do magic with fish or are interested, I would check into this. Jumbo X - Three giant coins appear and vanish at the fingertips in an incredibly visual sequence! Really similar to Silver Rose although no flash appearance of the coins. Basically Extroydinary using Jumbo Coins... Phone Card - A chosen card turns into a cell phone, then it appears inside the phone itself! Again, another effect that is ok... but the card that is vanished and reproduced isn't signed which in my opinion diminishes the effect. Portable Phoenix - A real live bird emerges from the real live flames of a burning wallet! Not too bad, if you have a spare paraket sitting around, try this one out. Pop Go the Aces - An easy yet HIGHLY VISUAL instantaneous production of four aces! 4 Aces are lost in the pack and are cut to... Sigh Re-Fly - Imagine: four pieces of a torn selection magically fly from hand to hand, restoring together into a complete card - ALL AT THE FINGERTIPS!! Imagine 3 Fly and Torn and Restored Card and you get this... Drawbacks include major lapping, card not signed, and card not examinable... Mouthing Off - Make a card VISUALLY change while held between your teeth! Decent change of a card, but are left picking cards up from either the table (or how Chris does it on the DVD) from the ground. All Rolled Up - A chosen card appears rolled up between the spectator's palms! Ok, this one kinda got me confused. A Sharpie marker, which has no business in the routine, is produced and placed into the outstreched palms of an awaiting spectator (trapped between both palms, so pen is hardly visible). A card is selected and vanished. The pen is removed from the specs hand. The specs open theirands and a rolled up card is there (?). Nuff said 7 Digits - A phone number magically appears on a blank piece of paper! A great date trick! This was cute... A blank peice of paper is held by a spectator. The performers phone number appears on it... then he asks the spec for her number... Ok moving on Influence - Predict a randomly thought-of shape in the fairest possible manner! In my opinion, this was the best thing on the DVD. Eventhough I say this, there is definitly room for improvement. A card, say the 5 of Spades is placed on the table as a prediction. The spectator selects a card which just so happens to be the mate of the prediction. Next the performer asks for a geometric figure. The spectator says "triangle". The 5 of Spades (prediction) is turned face down on the table to reveal a large triangle drawn on it's back. I would have been more impressed if it went that smoothly, on the DVD the spectator says "Diamond". Obviously, Diamond is not one of the outs so he kinda changes her mind and says "well Triangles are kinda like Diamonds". I don't really get why they didn't re-shoot that. Anyway, I think this trick could be a little bit better if he would have given it some more outs. For instance, he could have had they name an ESP symbol. There you only need 5 outs. In the routine he has now there are only 3. It wouldnt be too hard to place a couple more outs in the card box considering the spectator's don't know what is supposed to happen next. 8 Ball - A blank card is printed with the graphics of an 8 ball. Pull a REAL 8 ball from the card, and the graphics are gone! Then, put the ball back, it's flat again! This is a routine using a Baltazar Fuentes One Handed Color Change to pull an 8 ball from a card and put it back on. If you know this change already, then go right ahead. If not, it will definitly take some time to learn. Heaven's Aces - A knuckle buster! One at a time, four jokers appear at the fingertips then change into the aces! Tough, but worth the work! Again, another routine using the B.F. One Handed Color Change. This one is a little more difficult considering you are handling a Quintuple at the begining. Again put in the work and you have a nice change of 4 Jokers to 4 Aces. |

Thanx alot Pasteboard Player!
Very informative! Does anyone else have anything to say with regards to this DVD? It definitely is quite sad that all the effects are not what they appear to be huh?

I need to get these. but after your review.. doh. the card can't be examined?? what a bummer. I don't know, 3 out of 10 is pretty darn low. but I've heard great things about Randell. are these series really THAT BAD guys?

Great review PasteboardPlayer.
Is the fish harmed in anyway or put through anything extreme in the Frankenfish routine? Thanks |

I just watched this dvd, and its not as bad as what people here say it is.... I thought it was a good dvd for the money considering it had way more material than most dvd's that are out there....i think 3/10 is a little low to score on this dvd...if you agree with pasteboardplayer, I wonder what he would rate a 10 for a dvd??

So what you are trying to say that the routines here are not good??So Flash Coins by Chad Long and Extroydinary by Troy Hooser is no good?? Just because someone else is teaching it, it doesn't mean that its no good... I would say that they are not originals by Randall, but they are good solid routines... by the way,you still didn't answer my question as to what dvd you would rate a 10....

Now, do they warrant publishing here? I don't think so.... And is that your only example? Cause if so, I sure wouldnt buy this DVD knowing I was getting one good routine (of which the basis had already found print). As for what DVD I think is a "10", does it really matter? Are you trying to judge the way I reviewed this DVD by the way I review or think of other DVD's? |

I've watched the dvd and found it enjoyable.
Mr. Randall is no Dai Vernon, yes. But I found his presentation enjoyable and there is some decent magic on the video. He's got some nice ideas. With due respect to those who didn't enjoy it, I'd recommend the dvd to anyone who is interested in close up work. Did someone mention another tape with Chris Randall? Or was that just a tape by the same producers? Now.. I WAS eating some teriffic spaghetti while I watched the video. I'd recommend the spaghetti also but I ate all of it. Dr Magic |

The production values of this DVD are terrible. The camera is hardly ever where is should be. The audio is sometimes hard to hear (of course I am deaf, so that may just be my ears). The material, however, ranges from the "I don't have a clue what that was supposed to be" to the "Hey that was cool!" catagories. Had the production been a bit more professional I may have liked this DVD more.

Re-Fly - Idea is good and easy but you can't let
the spectator to sign and examine the card as well as it require lapping. For I'll prefer Yves Doumergue method to perform the T&R card. Mouthing Off - Visual but you might end with picking up cards unless you don't want to use it any more. 8 Ball & - Quite tough and angle problems too Heaven's Aces though it really look cool. Not too bad for collection but I believe I can invest my $$ on other stuff which are even valueble. |
