Hi, I am 13, looking to become a card cheat(entertainment purposes), I have done magic for 3 years.
Does anyone have this DVD, and do they recommend it. Might some of the stuff be too advanced for me? I can bottom deal, nearly invisibly pass, elmsley, I don't know, I can do some other sleights, just wondering if it is suitable for me THanks |

You can deal from the bottom at 13!? Post a video, young man...
Darwin's DVD is good. But it will teach you nothing as it is an "exposé" DVD. Darwin describes many techniques, false deals, methods used during shuffling, mucks, etc., but does not teach them. If you want to learn the moves, you ought to get Jason England's material or some Richard Turner DVDs. Damian Nieman could be added to that short list too. Learning at 13 is fascinating. Kids of your age are usually spending their time watching stupid TV shows. I can only encourage you. It's a long path to follow though. Good luck. |

I was about this age when I started out card stuff. At 20 now an having worked on gambling since 14, I can tell you that if you look into Jason's stuff you'll have a lot greater easy in learning the proper fundamental technique. One of my first DVDs was Weapons of a card shark, it took me a while to actually unlearn some of the bad habits I got from it.
Start with Jason's stuff. While you are at it I recommend picking up a copy Expert card technique (with extra chapters) and have a look at relevant sections in that. Later, start reading EATCT and Card Mastery, watch some Turner DVDs and pick up GPS by Steve Forte as this will show you what you are trying to emulate. Grab Neiman and Wimhurst DVDs. Followed by any books or DVDs by Ortiz, Jack Carpenter, Paul Wilson and Benjamin Earl. Also I know you want to do it for entertainment but pick up books by Doyle Brunson or poker/blackjack strategists so you can talk with an air of knowledge about the subject. Oh, also just a heads up if you say you have a nearly invisible pass at 13, many/all forum members will be dismissive of this notion as it is a lifelong pursuit. Same as the bottom deal. |

You might want to read the review on Mickey MacDougall and Card Mastery (below). That is the book I had at 13-14 years of age and for a relatively inexpensive one source exposition, you will learn more about doing gambling moves and routines from that one book that any other combination of books and DVDs, but you have to read the review to see if it is for you. After that, then you can go on to the more expensive and “fancy” stuff. |

Why Ben Earl I think AMcD? Despite the fact that Jason England recommends taking a look at him in his bottom deal lecture notes, he has gambling routines that have take a different angle than the conventional ones I mentioned.

Try the Martin Nash 5 DVD Series 'The Charming Cheat', a lot of good material in the set. 'Best of Collection' by Harry Lorayne 4 DVD set, good routining and effects for a gambling act.
If you go on youtube you can find clips of both and see if this is what you are looking for. John

AMcD, I had the occasion to briefly speak and see some of Ben Earl's moves in live, and he's definitely capable of doing sweet stuff. I'm pretty sure if you guys meet they would be knowledge shared both ways, plus he's a pretty nice guy.

I like Darwin Ortiz myself, maybe it's because I am a left hooker.

Magicman491,
A 'brick' pass, half jiggle or whatever term you wish to describe probably isn't the kind of thing you are looking for in a gambling type situation or performance. Primarily because that type of motivation for handling the deck isn't easily justified. On this area of the Café, you'll probably find more people talking about table passes, hops or other gambling expose type shifts. But hey, for a guy of 13 it looks like you have a lot of potential. Keep working on the sleight, look at the left hand and see if you can make it look less claw like and more relaxed. I've been playing with the shift/pass in various forms for a while now and the best thing in learning any type of pass is to keep practicing and refining. |

If you wanna try this pass at the card table, ask for blind players.

Giuseppe, I think that's a bit rough on the kid. Yes I agree that the particular pass used probably (won't) wouldn't pass in a game (I can only assume as cheating is a academic/hobby pursuit for me).

You either hit it or you don't; there's not much of a middle ground and it's a pretty long road to so-called perfection. For a guy of 13, I think it's fair to expect IMperfection. A lot of imperfection. Bobbycash offered up some constructive criticism. All you've done is slammed the young man's confidence. In other words, you're a ****. For all we know, you could be the best cardman in the world... but even if this is the case, you still suck attitude-wise.
