I used to do shows at the Boy's and Girl's Clubs where I live (youth drop-in centres), but they merged with another agency that requires a full screening and intake for anyone who wants to do any volunteer work with the kids. It seems as though in my case they're applying this to someone who comes in once a month for an hour or two. Has anyone else ran into this kind of issue? And what have you done?

Yes, several times. In fact every organization that I do volunteer work for requires either a level 1 or level 2 background check, even if you will not be working alone with children or adults. In Florida, a level 1 check does not require fingerprinting, level 2 does.
My wife and I had to go through a level 2 check in order to pick up our grandaughter from school! I have had 3 checks in the past 18 months for 3 different organizations. What upsets me is that even though all the checks are done through the FL Dept of Law Enforecement, each organization has to initiate their own check. The agency pays for the background check, so what you do is go through the process if you wish to volunteer at nursing homes, hospitals, and faciity with children. Sadly, it's the price we pay for living a world with perverts & predators on the loose.

In some states, this is the law for anyone who volunteers or works with children, particularly in state-funded organizations. I don't see a problem with letting them do the background check. To be honest, I prefer that they do this rather than allowing just anyone access to kids, even only for a couple of hours.

In wa state the checks are good for 2 years and they are really only concerned with abuse of adults and children type crimes. this is a good thing as it gives you something to put on your resume. people like to know that they are looking out for the best interests of their children. posting your credentials and positioning yourself as a professional in working with children.
