A long time ago, when I started doing magic, removing the seal on a new deck of cards was fairly easy. At some point, though, U.S. Playing Cards and others began using self-adhesive seals. And when you break the seal, unless the break is completely clean, you're left with a gummy, sticky-backed seal. If you try to peel it off the body or flap of the case, you're worse off because a larger sticky region is left. And you certainly don' want that stickiness to transfer to your hands or the cards (unless, perhaps, in case of certain gaffes).
So how do YOU deal with the sticky mess left by the seals? (No pun intended!) |

Murray,
First off...welcome to the Café. I hope you enjoy your stay. Possibly Goo Gone will work. See: http://googone.com/ But, be careful in its application--card boxes are made of paper, and, as such, will absorb liquids if given half a chance. That said, the card box does have a "finish coat" on it so that should help delay any liquid absorption..if the liquid contact is not "overwhelming". I'd suggest using as little Goo-Gone as possible (on a Q-tip, Kleenex or rag) and be very gentle in your removal process. Hope this info helps. Best, Mike

I have much sucess just rubbing it off with my thumb, it eventually clumps enough to pull off the left over glue then I rub something like a t-shirt or a bandana on it to finish it off

Okay, I'm in!
One for the anoraks and OCD's amongst us. I'm still in therapy on this topic. Use the sticky side of the bit you have removed and rapidly dab the residue and it will all come off. It's a knacky thing and about the only thing I've mastered with a deck of cards! OR, check out Steven Youell's method of opening a deck! You won't have to worry about the glue. |

Home Depot, e.g., offers "Pro Power Remover", "Household Tough Task Remover", and other varieties -- ranging in size from 1 oz.bottles to 55 gal. drums (the latter would handle a LOT of decks!). Or are they all essentially the same substance? |

Guys. This is very simple. And only takes a couple seconds. I do it for every case. Just use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Stuff comes right off and the moisture evaporates very quickly. Try it

I never have this problem, I just break the seal rather than remove it, break it with your thumb along the curve the seal goes over, then the top half seals down to the flap, and the bottom half is on the box, no paper hanging, no residue. the only time I ever have a problem is when I hand a brand new deck of cards to a spectator and ask them to open them, they look at the box like some sort of puzzle and start trying all types of crazy stuff lol

Beware! Goo gone is kind of oily. Maybe you could try the stuff sold at your local drugstore to remove glue left from tape on the skin ( I think it is called Solvoplast, not sure!) It have the adventage to evaporate without any trace. Just a little bit on a towel should be enough.

My method is like Gary T's only I use curved nail scissors to cut following the curve of the indentation and re stick whatever is left back to the box and top (like Gary). very easy as long as you don't want to make a big deal of opening the box in front of the audience.

Agreed, but despite best efforts, if the seal doesn't tear/cut cleanly then adhesive may be exposed on the box.
The question has practical application. |
