Since no rude words are allowed on the Magic Café, Kent Gunn can only refer to his "rogue" patter for the Funshop C&Bs on youtube.
Thus our site can remain "politically correct" by using outside references and offering quote WARNING > > > BAD WORDS < < < WARNING http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHZWDptZu......embedded Unquote This patter brings Kent's routine one step further towards perfection: humor isn't bound by the "politically correct" (possibly on the contrary) and magic can incorporate more than borderline humor. If we come to think of it, slang's purpose is to bring people closer by using a special type of language. I think that, in its rough version, Kent's alternative approach brings magic closer to our spectators in a comparable (even if substantially different) way like Master Payne's or Ricky Jay's patters do... and it adds very powerfully to the misdirection used in these routines. Actually, the patter is a misdirection layer in itself. The whole routine seems casual, friendly and using a language that is normally used only in intimate situation: this is exactly why this patter works well for this routine. Top technique and very "casual" patter. Congratulations to Kent for having the guts to do some trespassing just for entertainment purpose. Like Hobson's egg bag it shouldn't be poorly imitated but it shouldn't be rejected either ... for it simply reaches its goal to magically entertain better. Please support him if, like me, you think that this unique way should not be imitated but should be acknowledged and its value praised.

What's offensive is that I own the routine, I've practiced the routine and it still fooled me.
He even managed to make the ending a surprise, somehow - with that audience. Kent, you're a genius. |

That's @!#$%&^ FUNNY!
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Late night at the Garage almost anything can happen. He does some card tricks that make the video look downright polite.
If some of you "ever so slightly" readers visit the south bay area come on by! Lot's of good magic, not always appropriate however. |

His cups and balls routine is a great routine. A great inspiration to advance the art of cups and ballsery.

If they can call it manipulation we can call it cups-and-ballsery.

Here I am trying to encourage person to person direct contact and you go and throw up Google to these people. They are at a site where they can just click PM and be in direct contact with the creator and you want them to go to Google and type in a bunch of letters?
That's too much work my man. Much easier to have it handed to them on a silver platter. Next thing you know they're gonna want it paid for too. |

Let me start by saying that I think this is the best cups and balls routine out there.
however, I think the patter in this video is better suited towards a crappy cups and balls routine that needs distraction, misdirection, and overall entertainment. I just think that the routine is so good and so clean, that it's best to just have very standard patter (like in the original youtube video) so that everyone is paying as close attention as possible. just using patter explaining what balls are under where so that everyone can follow along. the problem with the patter I think is that it can get too distracting... so you might lose focus on what's happening and then you'll assume that the tricky stuff happened when you were laughing at the patter and stuff like that. the great thing about this routine is that even if you're paying super close attention and not letting anything distract you... you still don't catch any of the moves. if I had the ability to perform the cups and balls this well... what I would do is do a standard version of the cups and balls, with 3 balls all the same colour... do all the standard moves, do the final loads with fruit... and use the patter that you used in this trick. your audience will still enjoy this routine because a standard cups and balls routine still gets good reactions, and you've got entertaining patter to go with it. then, when you're done the standard routine, I would say something along the lines of how "that routine isn't real magic and just uses slight of hand and misdirection, so I want to show you my routine that uses real magic and I want you to really pay attention this time". because to a lay person, they might not realize how much better the trick is than 99% of other cups and balls routines. so if you do the trick twice basically, it could go over really well I think. because in the first routine, you're doing french drop types of vanishes, and loading fruit from your pockets after you put one of the small balls away in your pocket. even though that stuff fools people and they love watching the cups and balls... I think they basically understand what's going on (even though it still fools them). so if they go into the second routine, trying to catch all teh stuff they missed in the first routine... they'll be dumbfounded. |

That's why I love to perform the cups and balls silent. No distractions. That's what I'm going to do in my multicolored routine as well, make the moves so clean, that you don't need patter to cover.

The routine uses a great deal of misdirection, what's entertaining to one group, is not so hot for another group. When performing for layfolks, I always use the Funshop patter, with absolutely no swearing. Magicians are a jaded group. The coarse language get's their attention and invokes an additional sense of camaraderie with the audience I cannot find any other way when performing for magicians. You do have the ability to a routine like this. It's inside you. Believe in yourself and devote time, every day to the routine you're talking about. I'll keep using the different colored balls because I know; it adds to the directness of the effects. When the isolated blue ball vanishes and reappears a moment later under the adjacent cup, I get a moment that is worth all the work. Find your own voice. Find the greatness that's inside of you. Layfolks don't need to have anything else to compare to my routine. If it goes over well great. I don't care how others do the trick. It's not about comparing one routine to another. Most people have either not seen anyone do the trick. Those who have, rarely have clear memories of that event. I'm there to amaze and entertain them with the best stuff I can do. Comparisons are meaningless to the audience, meaningless. You wrote about a french drop ? ? ? I don't do the french drop in the routine. There's one false transfer and it's there simply as a cover to remove a possibility. of backtracking a vanish. I don't know what your french drop reference was about. I also don't load from my pockets. I really don't know what you're referring to. I do appreciate the feedback though. Have a great day. Kent |

^^^ sorry, maybe I didn't explain myself correctly.
my suggestion was to keep your routine the same... but before you start your fun shop cups and balls routine... what about doing a standard version of the cups and balls with french drops and loads from your pocket? so basically have a 10 minute cups and balls routine. the first 5 minutes is a standard routine with the balls all the same colour, french drop type of vanishes, and loads from your pocket. then, go into your fun shop cups and balls routine where you use the complete vanishes and the awesome final loads. I think that would be an awesome routine, because after the first half of the routine, they'll be watching really closely and they wont have any idea. by doing a standard version before your fun shop version... I think it makes your fun shop version more powerful because I think most spectators will enjoy the first part anyways, but it will make them appreciate the second half more because it's so much cleaner. and I think spectators will realize how much cleaner the second half of the routine is and hopefully appreciate the magic more. anyawys, just a suggestion I had. |
