Over the last few months I have been collecting props and writing scripts for my new 1 hour paranormal/bizarre "magik" show, and I would enjoy hearing from Café members with critiques and feedback about the routines. And if you find anything useful in these scripts (or the whole script) please feel free to "steal" them. But please, if you do decide to use any of the material, make sure you adapt it to your performing style and not try to do the routines verbatim.

Here is the first draft of my back story to Lillian’s Diary, using the basic story as outlined in the instructions as my guide, but making major cuts to the length and trimming out some ideas and thoughts I didn’t need. *** This opening is much shorter than the back story in the instructions. And it also contains a number of key elements that explain the construction of the diary, and hints (poetry, notes, jottings) of what is to be found inside. I think this is a gentle way of putting the spectators on the general direction they need to go, without it ever seeming like you have been the one to guide them. The opening back story is their guide, you simply recounted it. From my version of the back story certain elements of the tale that will unfold while reading through the dairy may already be evident to some spectators. That’s fine, because as they go through the diary, the real secret and the reveal is how it all happened. Input gladly excepted. P.S. If you don't already have a "Lillian's Diary" you need to get one ASAP. It's probably the most mystery packed extended routine of mentalism or seance material on the market. If you're looking for a "one off," then don't buy this. If you're looking for 15 or more minutes of a psychic adventure... this is for you. |

Nicely done Al. I like it. A good back story must convey the necessary information without being overly verbose. And I agree with your take on LD.

A little name drop,of Lillian's sister,would not hurt,either! IMO

I really like this backstory, it ties everything together succinctly and sets the tone. Also, the published diary makes a bit more sense with this presentation (or at least it seems clearer to me).

If you have the diary, you already know about the long explanation of distributing the printed copies of the diary out to numerous mediums, L$&a studying the diary and trying to use her powers to make sense of some of the entries and so on and so on. I feel it's an unnecessary coda to the initial back story. And besides... that's exactly what your spectators are about to do... disassemble the jumble of diary entries into a coherent story with a surprising ending. I really see no need to talk about too much in the introduction. And if you read the other scripts I have publish on the Café over the last few days, you will see that the act I am framing never goes into the L$&a world. Just my opinion. |

She,is part of the Hobb's world... I got a thing for,Sis! So,I always drop a little touch of her,into my backstory,when applicable. I,do not own the L*ll*an D*ary. But,do own,Lil's Jewelry Box! Gary

I'm a little worried that people may just google Lilli*n di*ry and get to this page. Aside from the official website, this forum came out as the 6th hit when I google Lilli*n's di*ry. (spelled in full)

I been doing magic and mentalism for about 40 years, I've been on the internet before it was the internet (look up DARPANET) when there were simply newsgroups, and I've been discussing magical effects on the networks for almost 30 years, and not once have I had anyone say they saw that on the internet, or read about it on some newsgroup, BBS, Compuserve or any other of the various incarnations of virtual groups. As much as I try to respect the "rules" and conventions of a particular group, I really find some of these concerns rather anal. I'd be interested in hearing about actual incidents that happened to anyone while performing... "Hey... I know how you did that because I saw someone else doing it and I Goggled it... and then I went to Outlaw and purchased it." Let me know! |

Well, perhaps its jus me worrying too much.
My students know me as a collector of old antique peculiar stuff. I recently acquired the diary and yesterday I was sharing with my students the back story and the origin of it. One of my student was really into this, and she asked whether more information abt this strange diary can be found online. Well, I told her that I had tried but the names are just too common to get exact information even if they exist. So this struck me. At no instance have I even mention the word "Lili*n Di*ry" through out my sharing of the back story. But this is still a diary of Lilli*n. and we cant run away from it. So imagine that student of mine decided to go home to do a research more on this, typing key words on google. It hasnt happen but it could happen. And a logical keyword that she may type is Lilli*n di*ry. This is all hypothetical of course. And I do remember spookyone mentioning his sister finding out that his phantoms was a product of outlaw. |

So then don't refer to it as a dairy. Refer to it as Lilli*n's journal or Lilli*n's Notebook. Use a thesaurus and pick wherever synonym fits best. Trust me if you use a word enough it will stick in people's head and that's what they'll type when they go to search it. Often when I'm talking about something with my friends they'll use almost my exact words when referring to that same thing again.

Beautiful back story, and yes, you've solved the awkwardness of justifying a typeset diary in a most nature way. Thanks for sharing these with us, I enjoy reading your take on these routines.

Al,
This is great. Much more concise, but revealing just enough clues (with just enough subtle repetition), to more likely set the sitters on their way to exploring the book. Thanks very much for sharing this. |
