Last night I posted a comment on Facebook about Steve Martin's banjo playing and he was thoughtful enough to send me a personal message. I thought that was pretty cool. He must be between projects right now because we had a short exchange of private messages. I think it's pretty cool that someone in his position takes the time to write.

Actually, I think it shows that Steve was wearing his "banjo player's hat". Banjo players are remarkably approachable people.

I know an attorney who specializes in gambling law who is the spittimg image of Steve Martin. (He's had people run through emergency exits - setting off alarms - to reach him to get Steve Martin's autograph.)
So . . . it may have been an imposter. ;) |

I know y'all think I'm full of it, but I'm quite serious. Steve Martin the actor/comedian/Hollywood star probably acts a bit like an actor/comedian/Hollywood star. But Steve Martin the banjo player probably acts like a banjo player. I'm not one of his FB friends and know of no way to contact him, but I bet $50 if I asked him a serious banjo question (something about equipment or technique) that he would respond.
Banjo players are different. We're smarter, nicer, friendlier, and better looking. Well, you know, except for THAT kid.... |

Yes I had a simular experience in 1667 when I was arrested in a street fray, and having been committed to Newgate for wounding my assailant, I was placed in the same cell with the queen's dwarf, and conversed with an invisible speaker.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Steve was my magic teacher back in the mid/late 70's when I was a young dude.
I would go to Disney 3x a week for 3 yrs(my cousin worked there, and got me in for free) to learn magic from Steve at Merlin's Magic Shop in Fantasyland. We would talk and do magic stuff while I hung out with him. He would always be like Hey Kid I got a new one for you, ever see this one? Those were fun times. |

How can you tell if the stage is level?
The banjo player drools out of both sides of his mouth. |

Hey Stone, what kind of banjo d'you play? I have a good old 5 string, and just use my fingers. It's a great instrument.

I currently own three: a Deering Goodtime with the frets ripped out (it serves as a fretless), a Prucha Premium with Vega #2 inlays, and a Prucha Pioneer flathead banjo. What do you play? And my point is this: if I were to approach Steve Martin with a pen and paper and Bambi eyes to ask him about his autograph, he would probably treat me totally differently than if I approached him and asked, "Hey, Steve, you play some clawhammer on an open-back banjo in some of the YouTube videos of you performing back in the early 70s. What can you tell me about that banjo? What was it and do you still have it?" My guess is that he's had a LOT of similar conversations over the years. He's a banjo player. |

Steve Martin is a member of the Magic Castle, and used to come in fairly often. He came into my shows more than once. I talked to him several times. He was quiet and appreciative, but somewhat reserved. He is a very nice man.

I have a one-string banjo. One is enough.

What's the definition of a gentleman? Someone who knows how to play the banjo, and doesn't.

I love a good banjo joke, or more accurately, a good anti-banjo joke.
Years ago my band was rehearsing and the guitar player was busting my chops. I had no choice but to pick up the phone and say "Hello, Dime a Dozen Guitar Player Company? Can you send another one over right away. This one is not working out". |
