Performers do not take the time to think of branding. Get them calling you, not a magician.

Soooooo how about some ideas or processes on exploring a "Brand" for oneself.
Chris gave examples in his OP of established performers. What criteria do you use to start the journey??

Chris,
Your skills with the balloons are awesome! That's some serious talent you have. I am impressed with your balloon making ability. I am sure your talent with magic is equally as awesome if not better.

Chris. We know a bit about your magic, and now you've posted pix of your balloons, so now I gotta ask; what daredevil things do you do? Yellow straight jacket escape?

This entire thread kinda got derailed b/c of my balloon art...that was not my intention at all. Thanks for all the comments...I'm flattered. Please don't take offense, but I have requested with the MODS that this thread be cleaned up a bit so it stays on topic.

If threads only remained on topic, this would fast become a very boring place. Indeed, there might be some people (you can amuse yourselves by imagining who) who would no longer be able to post in any threads at all. No, my friend: trying to remain on topic sets a very dangerous precedent. |

Great post on concept of branding!
Christopher - as you become older, do you see your branding morphing in a different direction? |

On 2012-10-14 14:28, davidpaul$ wrote: This took some deep soul searching on my part. For the longest time, I tried to be "dark and mysterious" and for me that just doesn't play. I am a funny guy in real life yet that side of me seldom made it to the stage. I always thought that being a comedy magician was looked down upon so I went out of my way to NOT be that guy. I have often heard people say "if you're a sh***y comic, then learn a magic trick. If you're a shi**y magician, then learn a joke or two." It was like being a comedy magician was a crutch and not really respected by either comics or magicians. It still might be by some, but the difference is, that I no longer care! It's who I am so time to embrace it. The good news is that for me, it's not a crutch. I'm a very funny guy who happens to perform powerful magic. The best of both worlds. Here's the problem with being a magician. I believe that 90% of us seem to just disappear into facade that is magic. We all look alike, sound alike, move alike, and many of our shows are quite similar in presentation and feel. Don't believe me? Google "Magicians for Hire" and take a look at what pops up. I wanted to try and break away from all of that. By embracing my inner comic, half the battle was already won. Next was to take a look at my act. My first priority was "what do I do in my act that fits me as a comic performer?" Whatever didn't fit that bill was taken out! What was fluff and what wasn't and what didn't I need? What was filler? After trimming down my act, I was left with the bare bones that I could then rebuild and format to fit my persona. I have said for years that it matters not what I do b/c it's not about the steak, it's about the sizzle! People don't want a magician...they want Christopher Lyle, who happens to be a magician. So now I've got an act that's better than it ever has been before...both strolling magic and my stand up act. After all was said and done, I still felt like something was missing. It was my look. It didn't fit me. For years, this was my look... BORING! It's a nice clean look but doesn't look fun or interesting nor does it define who I am. It was very forget-able. I started looking at images of entertainers whom I admire and their looks. Guys like Bizzaro, Sylvester the Jester, Gallagher, etc. All of these people have a distinct look that fits their character. I wanted something like that for me. Something that even if people didn't remember my name, they would still remember ME! So I came up with the idea to wear a bright yellow zoot suit and I haven't looked back. It's quickly become my trademark...my brand. I think the first part of discovering what works for you, is to figure out WHO YOU ARE! Until then, I fear that you're just another guy in a black suit or black eye shadow with a deck of cards.

Maybe a tad bit creepy! Then again, I hope to god I'm done by that point and can sit back and look over a wonderful career. Bottom line is, I think we all should embrace change and new ideas and follow the yellow brick road! (no pun intended!)

This is definatly something I need to develop more. I have a logo, a website, I have a routine, I have everything I need, except an image, a brand.

Thanks Chris for the input...seems like the "Brand" is driven toward the "Look"... clothing. In your case the bright yellow zoot suit.
Mac King and the plaid suit, as well as the other examples in the OP. This has really got me thinking. What could make me stand out and in what form would that be? (me thinking out loud) As opposed to a dramatic wardrobe change could you, just as a thought, wear a unique lapel decoration or button. Maybe a sports jacket where one sleeve is a different color.....just trying to brainstorm here to get some ideas flowing of different forms of "Branding". Any other ideas on Branding and what form it would be manifested??

Christopher, I have always had a certain level of respect for you, in spite of some different opinions on a couple things. But, I'd like to say openly, that my level of respect just shot way up because of your admission of how you came to embrace who you are.
I had begun to question you in regard to what seemed very much like what I've seen in a lot of magicians... this being the tendency to flit from one thing to another, in an attempt to find that magic bullet that will shoot them to stardom. I have seen plenty of other magicians over the years that try every new persona that they see working for someone else, hoping for a fit, as if they are paper dolls with interchangeable clothing. One look and they're Copperfield, the next they are Criss Angel, the next makes them Eric Jones. In your case, I saw dark and brooding, and soon thereafter I saw the zoot suits in a riot of colors, and now that has become more "casual cartoon" (if that's a style), with a color theme. Worse yet, is the fact that I recall seeing some of those in the same place at the same time. It seemed that this also happened within a relatively short period of time. Unless you are openly billing yourself as a character actor, with a "menu" of characters to pick from, it obviously creates a mixed message. I recall thinking at the time that a prospective client, having never seen you work might be unclear who (or what) they might be booking. But it now seems obvious that you were searching for you, and not trying to put a square peg into a round hole by imitaing the success of others. If a style changes over the years, in spite of having found who you are, that's OK, and not completely uncommon. Sometimes it makes more sense than some guys who appear to simply wither away under their increasingly-evident hair dye and stuck-in-time clothes. I have "re-invented" myself a couple of times, and usually because I came to an admission that I no longer fit the persona I had lived previously. Of course, there are certain classic looks that manage to survive, in spite of time. But it takes a strong character like Cardini to pull it off. But, it takes a stronger heart to age and "morph" with grace. Young, wild, and free only works if you are. So, I suspect that yellow suit may one day give way to something that speaks to your level of maturity, AT THAT FUTURE TIME. Even Keith Richards has evolved.
