Hello fellow magicians. In a week a have a wedding reception in which they want strolling magic. It is my first time performing strolling magic. Do you think Scotch & Soda and Hoping Halves are good to perform or should I leave them out? Also, does anyone know where I can purchase keys by the bunch at a cheap price (This is to perform Key Bending)?

Most key stores have rejects or mistakes. They get credit from some suppliers, but you can get them if you negotiate.

When doing walkaround magic, I prefer having tricks in my pockets that need no or really small set-up. 3 fly, invicible deck, sponge balls, card to Mullica wallet, bill switch just to name a few routines that need no complicated set-up. In some cases, I just have my 3 coins and a regular deck of cards.
What your brain can imagine, you can create it. Dont wait, just do it.

Do the effects that you do best. If they require a reset, so be it. (But start learning to be best at some effects that don't require a reset.) If your presentations of Scotch & Soda and Hopping Half are solid, entertaining routines, then by all means include them. (However, if your presentation of Hopping Half is the usual, you're-not-paying-attention-let-me-do-it-again-(you-idiot) schtick, I, for one, would leave it at home.)

If they need to be reset than leave them out.

Thank you all for your posts. Puggo, would you happen to know where I can see Back in Time performed? It's the first I hear of this presentation.
I tried searching through youtube but couldn't locate anything. |

Walkaround is something I do quite a bit of, especially in the corporate and wedding reception markets. It is very true that you should use effects that require very little, if any, reset. By the way, I do HH in these situations as well, and if you think about it carefully, there is a way to do it so that it automatically resets for you.
The other thing to remember is not to weight yourself (read: your pockets) down. Pick anywhere between five to ten effects that will take up very little space in your pockets and that are not bulky or heavy. If you are comfortable doing such a thing, you can perform entire sets using only borrowed objects (you can even borrow a small bunch at the outset and have them on the table, and go through using items here and there, making it look like you are making it up as you go), which further reduces what you have to carry. Another thing to consider are effects that each take a couple of minutes to perform. This allows you some luxuries: You have the possibility of performing five effects for one group, then a different five for the next and so on. It also allows you to perform for the right amount of time for each group without overdoing it and boring them. Just remember to have a strong opener (does not need to be flashy to be strong, but it can be) and a memorable closer. Just a few ideas of great walkaround effects that either resent instantly or require reset that can be done on-the-go: Ring and string (such as The Relentless Ring and String Routine by Bob Miller - can use a borrowed finger ring) 3 Fly (pick a version) Test Conditions by Paul Carnazzo Color Changing Knives Sponge Balls Any Pen Through Bill that uses a borrowed pen and bill, such as Misleading Misled by Alan Rorrison or Driven by Cameron Francis Random Sample Shuffle Bored by Simon Aronson Other classics like Abitious Classic, Ambitious Card, Gadabout Coins, Matrix, gaffless Copper/Silver, Twisting the Aces, etc. What you select just depends on your personality, the venue in which you are performing and the clientele for whom you are performing. I hope this information is useful to you. |

Mark Jenest has a different presentation to his HH variant, on the 'Miracles while you wait' DVD - something along the lines of trying to recall the instructions the magic shop gave him on how to do the trick. I guess the back in time presentation for the HH is fairly logical if you want to avoid the 'you're wrong' presentation that is popular. |

Basic thing for walk around is take the tricks you think you will need....then unload your pockets and leave half of them out. My biggest mistake has been overloaded pockets which made transitions between or within tricks hard.

I was just going to perform the usual HH routine and at the end instead of showing you have nothing left a jumbo coin is produced. Dr. J, can you explain how to automatically rest the HH. Can anyone explain how Back in Time is performed? I'm plan on performing the following tricks: Prediction trick (Not sure what it's called) Key Bending Color Changing Knives Diminishing Deck Diminishing Die Scotch & Soda Sponge Balls Out To Lunch Card Trick Hoping Halves Thumb Tip Blendo Nesting Coin Boxes Ring on a Stick I'm not sure if these tricks are feasible or if they are enough to fill an hour. There will be approx. 100 people and it's being held at a backyard. |

100 people in one hour just pick your three favorite tricks, that will be more than enough. Maybe have one or two back ups in case.
Don't make the mistake of finding a group of people that like you and spending 30 mins with them performing all your tricks because you feel comfortable, its not about you. |

There will be approx. 100 people and it's being I have done a walkaround show for over 300 people, indoors and out, using no more than 5 effects for a couple of hours. How long have you been doing magic? Most of those effects listed above by myself and others can easily fill 3 to 4 minutes each, but there is no reason to have 10 or 15 of them or more. Just as an example, Eugene Burger can perform a 45 minute show using nothing but the contents of his wallet, which is not bulky or overloaded. The last posts from both djurmann and magicguy are absolutely accurate. As I mentioned in my previous post, be sure you are not spending too much time with a group - too many effects and too much time spent doing them for that one group will bore them and you will lose the attention. |

I do about 5 different effects ..... no reset is the key!!
Remember you are showing to a small group of people, not just one person, time management is also important

Also people want to speak to each other...you break the ice, you oil the machinery, you inspire, you enthuse, but you are NOT the main event. 5-7 minutes per group is a good guideline. 12 groups at 5 minutes and you have filled an hour....so a max of 3 tricks per group. Take 6 tricks and you will have enough. If you are doing the meal/photos and the evening then take two sets of 6, one for the evening and one for the evening.....as a suggestion

Djurmann, thank you so much for the guideline. Great advice.
A friend of mine suggested taking a very small table so I could perform the Cups and Balls. I could place my tricks inside my breifcase, place the breifcase on top of the small table and use it as a performing surface. It seems like a little too much. I guess the only advantage would be that I could reset tricks like Scotch & Soda inside the breifcase. Should I or should I not? |

That just depends on how much effort you want to put into lugging even a tiny table (as it were) and a briefcase. It also depends on how much room there is to have it set up and how much foot traffic there will be. My advice in this case would be to skip the table and briefcase.
However, if you have a good cup and ball or chop cup routine in your repertoire ready to go, see if you might find some coffee cups at the venue and use them with rolled up dollar bills. Perhaps some of the guests will be seated at tables in this venue, giving you that impromptu opportunity. |
