When you walk up to a table do you Ask if thsy would like to see some magic? or do you just say hi and start your routine.

I introduce myself, then ask if they would like to see some magic. Some people are there simply to socialize with one another, and don't want to be bothered. Though sometimes I get asked back to a table because they are curious because of the reactions coming from the other tables.

I always ask. I walked up to a lady (alone) clacking on her computer while waiting for her meal - I asked, and she said "do I look like I want to see some magic?". So I left. Later I noticed she was finished and closing her computer, so I walked over, didn't say anything, and made her a pearl poodle. She gave me a dollar tip!

I'm with the group here. I introduce myself, ask how everyone's doing, chat a bit, then ask if they enjoy magic and would like to see something interesting. Frequently one person is more enthusiastic than the rest; I'll move round to that person and let them be the focal point.

I always ask as well. Same as S2000 does, I introduce myself, ask how everyone is doing, ask if they would like to see some magic.

If I were in a restaurant and an entertainer (magician or otherwise) came up to my table and without asking, began performing, it would not end well at all! One should ALWAYS ask (or be requested) before the magic begins. There are many times I just approach a table, we chat for a few minutes and then I leave and I never did a single trick. Always ask!

I accidently posted this on the wrong forum. Since this is where is should be, I will re post it
It really depends on the situation. Most of the time I approach the table, ask everyone how everything is, I then introduce myself "By the way, My name is Andy Luka I am a professional Magician hired by (restaurants name), to provide you with a few moments of table side entertainment while you wait for your meal, would you like to experience some magic tonight?" However at larger tables I tend to grab attention with a fire wallet, and then introduce myself, with the same line as above. There are a few things I would like to point out about my introduction. I am very particular about what I say and how I say it. My goal in an introduction is to set the expectation for the guest. I follow a simple formula. 1 tell them who you are 2 tell them what you are going to do 3 tell them how long it will last This way your guests know you are a magician and you are going to entertain them for only a few moments so they can get back to their conversation or whatever it may be. I am sure to use the word entertainment, so they know I’m not trying to show off or intrude on their night out, I am there to help them have a good time. I keep my effects brief total of 3min of their time. When I am done I say. “Thank you guys for your time, I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening at (restaurants name). If you would like me to come back before you leave, be sure to let you server know. By the way here is my card, if you ever have an event and would like to entertain your guests please give me a call.” It is important to thank them for their time, after all you did interrupt them, regardless how good your intentions are. I always let them know I can make it back to the table, (most of the time I get called back to the table, it’s because they want to tip me) and always leave a business card, no such thing as too much advertising.

Very good advice andy!
I have a few questions if you don't mind my asking: out of curiosity... what tricks do you show them in 3 minutes? how many tricks? do you have different sets or do you always perform the same tricks when you approach a new table? are you only doing 3 minutes because you have lots of tables to visit... or is 3 minutes of magic plus 1 minute of intro an appropriate amount of time in most cases anyways? if the table is really enjoying the magic... do you ever do a longer set... or do you just end the set as scheduled pretty much regardless? if they request that you come back, do you do another 3 minute set... or longer? |

When I worked tables, I did it upon request so no need to ask.
If walking around at a cocktail party, again I don't ask. Instead I introduce myself and say that I have been sent over to entertain you for a few moments…and begin. Works for me |

Good Questions Adam,
1) I am a big fan of the 3 sets of 3. With an extra set of 3 for regulars or extra special tables. But to be honest I don’t always follow this rule of thumb. I have phases, if I want to practice my 3 fly routine, then for the next 4-6 weeks I will perform it more often than any other effect. But I always have different sets for tables that are next to each other. 2) I am doing “about” 3 min of magic. It may be 4 or 5. It depends on the table. But I try not to go any longer. My goal is to keep them wanting more. However I may be at a table for much longer than that just talking to them about whatever comes up. I like to get to know my audience and I like them to know me, you need to build a connection it helps make a lasting impression. 3) Yes, I go longer sometimes but I try to keep it to a minimum. Like I mentioned before, I want to keep them wanting more. 4) When I am called back I always do at least one more effect, and if they call me back for a tip it’s usually a “show stopper” chop cup, floating ring, or anything that you can perform that has a super high impact. I don’t openly ask for tips at restaurants, I don’t want the servers to feel like I am stealing their tips that they depend on. But when I am tipped I accept and let them know it does not go unnoticed. I usually say something like. “Thank you I really appreciate it, you guys have been great tonight, I really want to show you guys something special, that I don’t show everyone.” This is only what I do, I am not saying it is the right way or the wrong way, but it’s the way that works best for me. I know some guys may do things differently, and if that works for them then that’s awesome. But you will quickly find what works for you and what does not. I am always open to suggestions from others, and I am not afraid to try new things.

Personally, I always ask. I approach the table, make a comment that gets them to respond in a positive way....like..."Hi, they told me this is the FUN table!" Or, "Hi, good to see you...they always put the fun people in the corner (or near the fireplace...or in the middle of the room....or whereever they happen to be sitting). Comments like these, I've found, disarm the table. they make me non-threatening and develop an anticipation of what's to come. Then I intoduce myself, and ask if they would like to see a couple quick tricks. Even though my goal is to perform 3 routines per table (if all goes as planned), I still say "a couple of tricks". "A couple" doesn't seem like it would take as long as "a few". My approach indicates to them that I'm a fun guy who doesn't take himself too seriously, and that I'm going to be visiting them for just a brief time.

I saw a magician walk up to a table without saying a word and pull a sponge ball out of the customers ear without saying a word. Now the person thought it was funny as heck but iam not to sure that would work with a lot of people.

I always ask...
To be honest when we are hired at a restaurant, magic isn't nearly as important as our true role is. Customer service. We have to be personable, police, welcoming and engaging. So opening without talking and just doing an effect, I feel that it's intrusive. UNLESS I was invited there by them because they saw me at another table. Then you aren't intruding, you where asked to be there. So we are really hosts. It's like a big party and we make our ways around to thank everyone for coming. I like to approach by saying "Hi, how is everything this evening my name is Shawn. iI's my job to make sure everyone is having fun! I'm also a magician but NO I do not take requests to make mothers, fathers, mothering in-laws, father in-laws, grandmothers, grandfathers, brothers, sisters, spouses, other unwanted house guests or family members disappear but if you have noticed your annoying friend Karen has stopped calling you. Would you guys like to see some magic?" I'm open to joking around with them so I don't say that ALL the time but I like the "disclaimer" before I start. Let's them know that I don't take myself that seriously and I'm only there to have fun with them (not at them). |

Yes, I also place heavy emphasis on the "couple of quick tricks" offer so they know I'll not take up a lot of their time. Another thread on this same subject suggested the line..."The management asked me to stop by and..." I use that often, and is serves to let them know that I'm there at the behest of the restaurant's management and not just some guy trying to get tips. I wear a name tag to help with that also. |
