If anyone was lucky enough to attend GENII'S 75th Birthday Bash, you may have seen Garret Thomas' new effects, Profile/Skewer. They are unbelievable new insights to classic coin gimmicks that are overlooked, so check it out:
"As the art of magic evolves, we find that a single amazing moment is often stronger than an entire entertaining act. Coin magic, focused almost entirely on transpositions, is in particular need of something to make it "stand out" and give it more "depth." With PROFILE and SKEWER world-renowned sleight of hand expert, Garrett Thomas, brings you two amazing moments of strange that will give your audiences something very different to talk about. These extremely powerful, reality-twisting moments break through the expectations of the typical coin trick and force your audiences to ask themselves, "Did that REALLY just happen?" PROFILE In Garrett's new coin concept, you slowly press your finger into a Kennedy half-dollar that amazingly melts, shaping a deep impression into the metal of the coin. PROFILE includes an optional twist ending, as the portrait of the president can be shown to have been pushed out in 3D. SKEWER Garrett has reworked the classic Karate Coin into an illusion that allows you to slowly push your finger completely through a half-dollar and make it look as though it is melting in every direction through the face of the coin. This is definitely NOT your Grandmother's finger through coin trick! Included with PROFILE and SKEWER are two amazing new tools, made from Kennedy half-dollars. Garrett explains how to use these tools in two real-world routines and includes four options for performing each of the effects (ranging in difficulty from novice to expert)." Apparently, it's having a limited release to begin with, but I was able to find it exclusively at The Magic Emporium ( http://shop.wholesalemagiconline.com/Pro......oryId=-1 )

It will be interesting to see his take on the Hologram Half... I have had some of these for years and love the effect I do with them, so it will be nice to see what that part is all about.... might just buy this one to find out.

Garrett's an awesome magician, and I love every minute I get to spend with him. He truly thinks about magic in a way that most people aren't even capable of. I am sure this is extremely finessed like all of his other work, so I look forward to getting one soon!

Hey Guys!
It's been released exclusively through a select group of dealers. I encourage everyone to support their local / nearest dealer to pick it up at. So far, based on the chatter, it's at The Magic Emporium (Tampa, FL), Vanishing Inc. (NY), Magic Trick Store (IL), and Penguin (CA). That is great regional coverage! And to get back to the original post, after watching Garrett perform Profile/Skewer so many times at the GENII convention, I absolutely like Skewer. It's a great new take on Karate coin that makes sense about why you're putting your finger through a coin in the first place plus it's visually astounding to see it go all around the coin. Matt

My father owns a Harry Chapin Memorial coin that has HC's profile pushed out of it... wonder if I can adapt GT's Profile to it for a musical twist of somekind...

Mine arrived from Penguin on Saturday. I knew what the coins were from the demo, so no surprise, except the profile coin is really cool looking in person.
The DVD was a big surprise. I had thought that it would be a very simple explanation because the coins pretty much do the work. A very basic spellbound move and you have a great piece of very unusual magic. The DVD is actually very comprehensive. You get a studio solo performance and two live performances ( in a pub ) of both Skewer and Profile. Garrett goes over basic handlings for both coins. Garrett gives instruction on proper finger palm placement to make the hand look natural. Switches shown: Fake Take Spellbound Now you're up and running and can perform. This is what I use. I appreciate the advanced handlings and enjoyed watching them, but I'm a keep it simple guy ( translated, I can't do advanced work;-) Advanced switch handlings shown: Snap Change ( a spellbound type switch ) Roll over switch. This is the most difficult, but because of the way Garrett constructed the routine of massaging ( heating the coin ) it provides excellent cover for the switch. I think you could do it poorly and it will work. This is a fairly easy trick to perform, so you can actually watch their faces as you do it. MUCH different reactions than 3 fly or other transpo type of tricks. Not better, just different. Because it's done slowly, you really see them go through the "how is that happening" facial expressions. I would suggest not using too much magician patter on this. I've been letting them examine the Kennedy half. Taking it back and SLOWLY make the magic happen. Because you aren't changing a silver coin into a copper coin, they don't know a switch has happened. I say, "let me get my lighter" and I while I retrieve it, and I ditch the normal coin ( never go to your pocket without a reason and you must tell them the reason, or it 'smells';-) The lighter of course supplies the extra heat. You can let them examine the coin ( they'll want to ). Have I been asked to change it back? Yes! Then why don't I? Gut feeling not to. I use heat to cause the change and I tell them it takes extreme cold to change it back and I have to leave it over night in my freezer. I'm not a professional so if that's seems wrong or bad theater, it's what has been working for me. I'm open to doing if differently if I read a sound reason. I've only been doing it this week, but so far, the Profile coin is the big reaction getter. I thought it would be the other way around. Maybe I thought that from my experiences with the karate coin. I've carried a Half Dollar and English penny in my pocket for 30 years. I may not even perform it, but still carry them just in case. I will now carry Profile. BIG THUMBS for me up on this trick! |

I have Garett's DVD set and many of his products and I'd have to say this is my favorite of his releases. And the DVD is a class in good/proper coin handling.
The look on people's faces when the coin begins to "change" makes this something I will carry everyday. Watch the demo and see how slowly Garrett does the changes: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/2901 |

So can one push out the face, have them examine it, retrieve it with a sw#### and then skewer your finger? I couldn't tell if this was marketed to do in conjunction with one another

I personally wouldn't combine them for the same group/person. You could, it's just not the way I go with it |
