So there you are, in the midst of a group of ordinary people, no fellow magician's in sight.
They want you to perform, and you only got time to do 3 effects. Remember these people are not interested in flourishes and passes, or how clever you are performing other various stunts with a deck of cards. Or coin rolls for that matter. They only want to be entertained! So what 3 effects do you decide to perform? Personaly I would start with a pocket-knife routine, using the gimmicked knife only! You ask them if they want to participate in a test. Changing the color of the knife as you go along. Afterwards you can hand out the knife for examination. There is only one knife in use. As a follow up, I would choose an effect with sponge balls. Don't laugh now. Under the right circomstances these sponge balls can be a killer. Performing for a lady in the audience, she will scream and laugh, when the balls multiplies. The beauty with this effect is that it happens in the spectators hands. For a finale, I would pick an Ambitious Card routine, and end it with Daryl's The Ultimate Ambition. As I see it The Ambitious Card is an effect hard to follow. So guys, what 3 effects would you pick?

1) Scotch & Soda - http://www.magicgeek.com/scotch--soda-johnson-329.html
2) Invisible Deck - http://www.magicgeek.com/invisible-deck-97.html 3) Magic Match Boxes - http://www.magicgeek.com/magic-match-boxes-37.html All very simple tricks that wouldn't fool a magician, but always floor a group of ordinary people. |

I am trying for some that haven't been mentioned yet - but I totally agree with the choices above - all solid effects for sure! And ones that can fit in my pocket
For my three how about: Kid Kards - especially when done for adults (mini)Chop cup routine - Don Alan's routine and maybe, Borrowed Ring on/off String - Vinnie Marini has a great version or Borrowed Ring on a stick/wand - David Ben's from Tricks or Houdini Okito Box routine - A member posted a video a while back - great, great routine and I worked out a handling. JustLoco: I am definitely going to pick up those Magic Match Boxes - way cool especially for the price. |

That's an easy one for me, because I perform in precisely that situation all the time. My three routines for that situation are
1) Chop Cup 2) C/B/S with complete vanish at the end 3) Scotch and Soda with ungaffed $20 gold piece and Barber Half Dollar. In these same situations, if I do a card trick, I will do 1) The Gummi Bear (original routine) 2) Triple climax signed card in sealed envelope in wallet. Sometimes I do a knife transposition that I learned from Nic Niberco. The main thing with all of these is the presentation.

1- silk routine using TT
2- play it straight triumph or chicago opener 3- cups and balls I belive you can entertain people with flourishes, stunts and coinrolls, so if you can put them into the routines is fine.

1. WOW - transformation before their eyes
2. Holey Moley - magic in their hands 3. Mike Gallo's Shell-less ball and vase as a finale. I use tinfoiled chocolate eggs or balls so that it makes a great giveaway at the end. |

What I do for walkaround now...
1. One coin flurry (flash paper production and jumbo coin production) 2. Wine bottle production (originally by ?Bob Read? learnt from david stone) 3. Card to pocket with 51 card to pocket ending. I choose these routines because these are the only ones I can do well enough without practicing. There are definately stronger tricks out there. I'm sure there are many improvements I can make. My coin flurry, for instance doesn't get reactions as good as I'd like; probably something I have to improve with timing/ structure of the routine. |

Great topic. I think lay people always love sponge balls. If done well, sponge balls looks about as close to real magic as can be. Also love CMH, a coin flurry, maybe a little impromptu mentalism, etc..

I figure there may be NO TABLE, so if I am going somewhere and think I may be asked to do some magic... I carry:
Cricket Bat (my version of I'll Start Again) Copper to silver (using silver dollar, small and large penny) Learned from Francis Carlisle and it never fails. Some card work: Slop shuffle, card on forehead, card to pocket or wallet if I brought it). STOP, leave with them wanting more. If a table? Might do mini cups and balls, or bowl rotuine with borrowed objects.

Three things I always have with me would probably be my choice.
Extreme Burn (Richard Sanders) One coin routine with Morgan Silver Dollar Torn 2 Pieces (Shawn Farquhar)using a picture of my daughter when she was 8 years old, holding what was then our brand new dalmation puppy (very cute!). None require a table. All play quickly.

1 hot rod.......always a kill (for those of you who know my love of this simple trick)
2 brain wave (my version) or some other rough/smooth principle trick 3 some sort of penetration like sankey's handling of pencil through dollar......very clean and impromp-two ...or....3 ring circus ....ect mabe .... penny and dime, s/s, ambitous card .......ect I think there should be somthing witty yet not as strong so as to build on.....then.....somthing strongly visual then somthing with a strong mental effect (there's always someone in the crowd that needs some mentalism)... all of these should be simple (yet powerfully strong), as far as the handling and premise are concerned...something easy for the spec/s to follow ....... and the performence to be top notch |
