Here is a poster for a Halloween Show I'm doing in a theater on Central Illinois. The show revolves around magic from the early 1900's. I wasn't involve in the design but I thought the producers of the show did a pretty good job of replicating a poster from that era.

Hello,
A nice start, Here are a few pointers.... In your contract/agreement - it should state that your name and website should be listed in all commercial-tie ups (marketing) Spirits and illusions? I am a bit confused...

Just looking at the poster, people won't understand what this is. You need to put more info on the poster.
Saying "The Illusion Show" is the most drab, general statement you could make that barely touches on magic. What illusion show? Who's illusion show? What's going to be done there? Is this for kids or adults? Also, I don't know if you perform for a living, but if you do, why isn't your name/website anywhere on the poster? Add some more info and you'll be well on your way. Kevin,
Did you read Eldon's Statement above? He did not come up with the Poster Design nor did he have anything to do with the Design. The Producers came up with the Design and it is all on them as they are the ones promoting the show. The Poster itself is really cool but Yes, it does lack much information. However, Eldon's hands are tied as he is the Illusionist not the Producer or the decesion maker for the poster. At least he has a Magic Show and he is working. I cannot say that about a whole lot of Magicians right now. Most are scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Rodney

Eldon,
Yes, it does capture the look and feel of early 1900s posters. Yes, if you were designing a new one for yourself you could do better about the information on it. Yes, we that read your first post know that you no voice in the design. I suspect that if you were designing your own you would ask opinions and advice before they were printed. If I may suggest: Maybe you can get permission to use that artwork to make your own future posters. Then you can change and add what you want. I like the look. Thankls for sharing. For any who want to compare the look and feel - Eldon's original purpose of the thread - here are some links. http://www.zazzle.com/melies_french_magi......19274128 http://www.zazzle.com/houdini_vintage_ha......63836296 http://www.zazzle.com/the_bowery_burlesq......82207833 http://www.zazzle.com/fra_diavolo_the_gr......52795145 http://www.zazzle.com/a_night_at_the_cir......11324467 |

I agree with all that been said, but it should be in your contact or rider exactly how you require your performance to be billed. I always offer exact wording on how they are to bill, advertise and promote my appearance. Otherwise most will just use generic terms like Illusionist, Magician, Disc Jockey, Comedian, Hypnotist, Mentalist, Entertainer, etc. I even take it one step further and provide my show logos to them in a variety of formats and sizes complete with logo and liner to assure it's done right.
I don't believe Eldon was really stating any more other than to show how they created a poster to simulate a poster from an older generation or time period. Good luck with the show Eldon. |

Rodney,
I never said Eldon designed it. Re-read my post. Just because someone isn't involved in the actual graphic design process doesn't mean the entertainer can't (and/or shouldn't) have a say in what information goes on the poster. That's all I'm suggesting. If you think the poster is "all on them," you don't understand relationships between the talent and the producers. The talent should be (and almost always is) very involved with the media that the show producers use to promote the event. Especially in this level of smaller, community-type theaters. To say "it is all on them," is irresponsible, if a simple show of interest or simple communication could result in a better poster that reflected the desires of the performer. If Eldon has no interest in having his name, his website, etc., he doesn't need to heed any of my advice. It's that simple. If I'm performing in a theater (small community theaters, for example) The theater will usually design the posters. However, I tell them I want my name on there, I tell them that my website must be listed on the poster, and I give them descriptions of my act, which include some of the above-mentioned specifics (see my original post). I'm not sure what you meant by "At least he has a Magic Show..." Yes, he does. I do too. Many magicians do. I don't see what that has to do with my post. I still recommend he put more information on the poster. I realize Eldon was just showing what the poster looked like. The advice we're sharing with him can be valuable for future projects even if it's not applicable to this one. Rodney, I was just trying to give some constructive criticism on the poster (which I assume is what he was looking for.) I thought he had a great start, I was simply trying to help him make the poster even better! Best Wishes, Kevin |

Is far from being correct. The producers want to bring in business and the entertainer wants to have a full house and build a name for themselves. So as our jobs (or managers jobs) is to make sure this is leveraged to the best for both parties.
